Safety at Yale vs Penn vs Columbia vs...

I wouldn't call the Radian at Penn a "private dorm" considering that it is way too expensive for 75% of students on campus.

What worries parents about the safety on these urban campuses? I've walked around a lot at night on Penn's campus and in the surrounding area. It isn't dangerous. There is a police station right by some off campus housing (though I don't think the students are too happy). The unsafe areas by campus are places no one really goes. If your kid is smart enough to get into Penn or Columbia or wherever, shouldn't s/he be smart enough to know not to walk 10 blocks off campus towards a dangerous neighborhood in the middle of the night?

Durham is a fine area. While it's got some bad parts, the college campus is pretty separate from the surrounding area. It's a lot like Yale/New Haven. Be safe, definitely, but there are nice, safe areas to have fun.

Still, it's targeted 100% at Penn students, sits on land owned by Penn across the street from campus, and was built under Penn's close supervision. Weren't they able to fill it pretty quickly?
