I'm starting to put together a list of stuff that I should take to Cornell for freshman year and I figured that I need a place to keep valuable items safe... So, I was wondering... should I buy a small safety box or something like that? Do you guys know about any other ways to store items safely without buying one of these? The problem is that most of the safe boxes I've seen have to be wall-mounted, and I don't think Cornell allows that (am i right?). So... any suggestions?

I know a few people who had safety boxes and kept them under their bed...they kept their camera, passport and other valuables in there. You should be able to find a small/medium box that doesn't need to be wall-mounted.

^ dewdrop87, do you think having one is necessary?

I never had one. I mean..it's common sense. I always locked my door when I wasn't there and even when I was in the room with the door shut. I lived on the ground floor so I never left anything valuable near the window. I also never left things out when I wasn't around.

I didn't have any issues....

Cornell doesn't let you mount anything on the walls, unless you want to pay housing couple hundred dollars at the end of the year. I don't think a safety box is really necessary. This is a very safe campus relatively speaking, do thefts happen? Yes, but as long as you lock your doors and windows you're golden. I had a friend who had a safety box, lost the key along with all his other keys, so it was more of a pain to get the box open, then again, you can also get a digital one.

There are also safety boxes that utilize fingerprint readers. I have an old fashion key and combination one. I find it useful for storing my laptop when I am not taking it with me. I find it to be a good idea, especially if you have a roommate because you never know if your roommate will remember to lock the door nor do you know who he invites over as guests when you are not there. I am not insinuating anything, but just stating the obvious.

Btw I use a Sentry safe. Cost me close to $120, but they have sales on them closer to school time. Check your local Staples, Officemax, Office Depot, etc.

Thanks, people, for the advice. I know that security is also a matter of being careful and cautious about where you leave your stuff... But yeah, on the other hand I think that blazinyan300 has a point... you never know what can happen or who comes into your room. I'm figuring that it won't do harm to have a little safety box 'just in case'. I'll probably try to get a small one, thanks for the advice!

You used to be able to rent one from the refrigerator rental people... info should be in your housing packet.

I bought my daughter a fire proof box. She puts her passport and jewelry in it.

A safety box is a good idea, unless someone steals the entire box.

This is why you get a big one. I mean I have a Sentry safe. I have something similar to this: SentrySafe SB0100 Fire-Safe Personal Safe Combo Security at OfficeMax.
I mean it does the job by keeping my laptop safe and don't you think it will look suspicious if someone walks out of a dorm room carrying a 20 lb safe without anything inside it. I mean come on. Plus, you could drill holes in it and chain it to your bed somehow. But if someone wants to steal something, they won't go around stealing safes. They will just take whatever is lying on the table in front of them. Then again, I may be wrong, but hey the chances of theft are greatly reduced with a safe.

my friend had a safe that was designed to look like a mini-fridge. I never had a safe, but I had a laptop lock.

I never had a safe. But I also had a single and locked my door most of the time (if I didn't lock it, I was a step away in the lounge anyways).

If somebody could successfully pick my lock and not get noticed in my busy hallways, cheers to them. I'd give them my junk just to congratulate them.

Even though smaller safes are easier to steal, they still offer an added level of security. They're nice to have, especially if you're taking sensitive documents with you and plan to keep the safe hidden, maybe under some books in a tub or something.

I use a shoebox. Haven't had anything stolen yet.

i just had a special location in my room where i hid things. and if i needed something, i waited until everyone was out of my room so no one knew about it

Wow.. I never thought about this before.. Great idea.. :)

Locking the doors is something everybody is mentioning, but let's say your roommate (who has the key) brings over some friends that aren't your friends when you're not there and those guys steal stuff. Then what? I would say a hiding place/safety box is recommended.

I guess I was just lucky and had a roomie/friends who respected my belongings and didn't touch without asking.

Then again...I assume that's because my roomie had a $5,000 computer set up and a $25,000 purse collection.
