Safety? ED? Chance? Trends?

My daughter is going by herself to Rice today for the weekend. She's staying at a hotel and will go for interview Saturday and Explore Rice on Sunday. I've told her to call me frequently so I know where she is. Are there any current safety issues that I should be aware of? Should she get a cab from the Marriott (med center) or take public transit to get to the school?

She is considering Rice ED if she likes the school on this trip. She has a 33 composite on ACT, 3.8 unweighted GPA at a competetive public high school. 5 on Calc AB test her sophomore year. 5 on AP music theory soph year. 4 on Latin AP junior year. 4 on AP US hist junior year; 780 on SAT 2 US history; 660 on Latin SAT II.
She has a strong music background and strong public speaking background.

The trend question is based on a concern her High School doesn't have a good admission rate at Rice. One student out of 6 was accepted last year and didn't attend. How much of a factor is the High School's history with a college like Rice? There haven't been many student's accepted from her high school for many years. Would it be a waste of her ED choice if the trend from her High School is so poor? She is also considering Northwestern. Northwestern has a record of accepting from her High School. However, she really isn't a cold weather person having been born and raised in California. All input would be appreciated.

No. I mean, there is the general stuff such as don’t wander outside alone at 2AM. But that applies everywhere.

She can walk. It is across the street

Probably as much as anywhere else. I am not sure why that is though. Have you asked her schools GC?

Also, when you say 1 in 6 was accepted, did any of them ED?

Post back if you have any other questions. Do not worry, she will have a great time at Rice.

If she doesn’t feel like walking (and it’s a little farther than just across the street, especially if you’re not sure where you’re going), the Marriott runs a free shuttle that will take her straight to campus. She can ask at the front desk and they’ll show her where to wait for it. It’s about a 5 minute trip – she might have to wait 15 minutes, worst case.

It might help to have a campus map in her bag/backpack, etc. Of course, she can always ask campus owls for directions!

It might not hurt to have a list of her strengths and some good questions about Rice planted in her mind. A little time studying the website and finding interesting classes, programs, EC’s can go a long way in showing that she’s an enthusiastic candidate
who deserves a place on campus next year!

I hope she has a wonderful time!

Is she applying to the conservatory as a music major??? (i’m seeing the “Singer mama” name there.) If so, that will impact admissions considerably. The conservatory is very, very selective. Re: admittance trends. Shouldn’t make any difference about the high school’s history if she applies E.D.- they’ll know that she is committed to attend if she gets accepted.

D is safe and having fun. Apparantly she has more info than I did and has everything under control. AS to the question of GC helping since she is in a large Oakland public school the GCs are stretched thin.
She’s done more research than I did and reassures me I don’t need to worry.

D said the campus is beautiful and people are friendly and helpful.
Thanks for all the feedback.

Haha, Rice is awesome. I barely got to see its campus the last time i visited texas, but I’ve heard the campus is pretty friendly. Though I won’t be applying ED, I will certainly RD this school lol.

@OP - I encourage your daughter to apply ED if she really likes rice. Forget about the stats etc. If that is where she wants to be, it is worth a shot. Cheers!
