I was wondering what are some good engineering safeties that I could appkly to next year? I consider Georgia Tech as one because if I take Calc III at my High School from them next year that I will get automatic admissions into Georgia Tech anyways, but I am trying to compile my list and I can't figure out other Tech schools that are safeties. Anyone?
Straight A's.

Computer Science > intended major
4.0 unweighted 4.0 weighted > b/c i transferred this year and my weighted GPA did not transfer. =[ sucks because my ranking is not even in the 20s because of my GPA.
219 PSAT -71/75/73
2100 SAT -670/670/760 >> i have no CLUE what happened in math!

A lot more schools would be safeties if you could retake the SAT and pull up that math score, which isn’t great for Engineering.

I disagree. I think a 2100 is good enough. I would invest more time on my SOP, classwork, and additional relevant extra-curricular activities.

Solid state schools are usually good safety schools (Probably not UC-B, UM, or UCLA):
UM, UCLA, UC-B, UW, Purdue, UIUC, Texas, etc.

UIUC is not a safety school for precisely the reason I gave - their average SAT is 700 per section. Texas isn’t either, with the top 10% rule crowding out many students in-state, let alone out-of-state. A 2100 total might look good, but a 670 Math score hurts at the top engineering programs. In addition, state schools usually put more weight on the numbers (GPA, class rank, SAT) and less on the essay, ECs, and recs.

It is not that I suck at math. It’s my best subject; i just did not do as well my first time. My goal is to pull up my score anyway.

Since when did UIUC average 700 per section? Please cite source.

Middle 50% of UIUC Engineering is 1310 to 1460. The midpoint of this is 1385, so the median is close to 1400, since the 25th percentile is pulled down by affirmative action. For comparison, the middle 50% for Northwestern is 1320 to 1500.

Thats fine. But still, I’d expect a place like UIUC to average roughly 750 or so on math, verbal has to be in the 600s.

any opinions on engineering at a liberal arts school vs. a public university?

What are some schools that could be considered matches/safeties other than GA Tech?
I know GA Tech all ready has high engineering rankings, but its not competative to get into it at all. Plus with HOPE if I maintain a 3.0 ( i think its a 3.0) , my education will be free. I just want other choices.
anyone?

im_blue,

the stats you cited for northwestern is student enrolled for fall 2006, not students admitted for fall 2007.

Holistically… 2100 is a decent score, though it would help to score 700+ on the math section. You have straight As… did you take a lot of challenging courses and load up your junior/senior years with AP classes? If so, I’d say you’re probably a match for UCLA, and even UCB… good super-safeties might be either of the Cal Poly’s in California.

OP: Just because you took Calc III (distance learning, I assume) with them does not officially guarantee admission. I took Calc II & III through CDL as well, and they made it very clear that it does not guarantee admission. However, with your stats, you could consider it a safety anyway :)

Perhaps it’s not competitive to get into it [GT], but it certainly is difficult to stay in school (I’m a current GT student).

Cal Poly SLO

Keep on retaking the SAT and there is still hope. I found it incredibly easy but somehow messed up my first two times, getting a 660 and then a 670. Finally I took it again (with no practice or tutoring in between) and pulled a 780.

Also, make sure to take both math SATIIs. If found them not too difficult. (770s both)
