New here, not sure how everything works so excuse me if I'm doing something completely wrong.

newspaper since 8th grade (editor in chief or MS paper and HS paper)
Studied abroad at an international school 8th through 10th grade
class rank: 14/430

I wish to study at a university/college on the east coast, preferably in new york, mass., wasington d.c., virginia, new jersey, rhode island.
Currently reside in california

I'm very unsure of what schools I should consider safety, good match and reach, my current list is: (i plan to major in communications)

northeastern u
emerson
american u
boston u
syracuse
ithaca
hofstra
suffolk
nyu (i'm unsure if this is a plausible choice)
ucsb (ive been guarunteed admission here)

Unsure whether to add more schools or stick with what I have, any help would be appreciated.

Stacie, you actually have a very nice balanced list. I believe that you are in at Ithaca, Hofstra and Suffolk. You also have pretty good chances at Northeastern, Emerson, American and Boston University. I wouldn't be surprised if you got into some of these. The hardest will be Syracuse (Newhouse) and NYU. Good luck!

Thank you very much for your input, I didnt realize syracuse was such a selective school

SU is a very selective school for communications

do you attend SU? If so do you like it?

no I don't attend, sorry, but you can try the SU forum for questions, etc. Also look at the school website if you haven't.

Okay, thanks anyways (:

Syracuse is great! I know many people who go there for communications/journalism and they all love it. Great atmosphere. The only thing that might hurt you are your test scores, but even so, I think you have a fairly good chance.

Only concern about syracuse is the weather factor (im from s. california) but otherwise it seems like a good school. And a strong communications program is an extra plus

Anything in the northeast is going to be super-cold compared to So.Cal.

If you want a more mild transition, American may be your best bet. Four seasons, but nothing too extreme. (AU really is a great school as well! I've heard many good things about it)

Yes, American is like my top choice!

But suffolk, northeastern, boston u, and emerson are in there too
