Safety ideas needed - LACs

We are having a hard time coming up with safeties. D's current list of schools to possibly apply to include UChicago, Grinnell, Middlebury, Rice, and Pomona. She has the stats to get in, but obviously not a given. Also, most likely NM finalist. She needs some safeties that are financial safeties also. Specifically, she needs merit aid or lower cost schools. She does not like any large schools, so that rules out our state schools. She also does not like any schools with a large Greek presence (like Denison).

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Whitman, University of San Diego, Clark, Drew, Creighton.

Since she likes Pomona, how about Pitzer. Same campus.

Pitzer’s not necessarily a financial safety, unfortunately.

Look at Keilexandra’s great thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/881237-ivy-caliber-safeties-matches-condensed-advice.html

Willamette.

Middlebury –> Oberlin (link above says they have merit aid)

UChicago –> Case Western (definitely has merit aid)

public LACs:

St. Mary’s College of MD,

William & Mary (financial, not admission safety)

Beloit - for someone with the stats to be seriously considered at your list, would likely qualify for some serious merit aid.

Oberlin would not be a safety, but would be another match school to add with merit aid. I realize I don’t know anything about the stats except for NMF, but it is far too competitive a school these days to have as a safety for hardly anyone. They also look for fit.

SDonCC, I’ll amend my statement to say that Oberlin is easier to get admitted to than Middlebury. I know students who were rejected by Middlebury who got into Oberlin. OP gives no stats, so who knows what a safety would be.

Would Guilford work?

Also there should be a whole bunch of perfectly nice LACs in your region that just haven’t become world famous yet. Here’s a link to all of the ones in Iowa: [Iowa Private Colleges and Universities - Iowa Private College Week](http://www.thinkindependently.com/)

Wheaton College (MA) Merit as high as $17,500/year, No Greek Life
St. Lawrence University (NY) Greek organizations do not dominate social scene.

For match schools, look at LACs in the US News 21-40 range or thereabouts, especially outside the Northeast. Some of these give decent merit aid. Also check out women’s colleges. Suggestions: Macalester, Colorado College, Kenyon, Kalamazoo, Smith.

For lower matches and safeties, look farther down in the same list or at public LACs. Suggestions: Centre College, Rhodes, Agnes Scott, Earlham, Hendrix, St. Mary’s College of MD.

If looking for merit money and California location is desirable, not a LAC per se, but not large – Santa Clara University

Also kind of a LAC within a large university, definite financial safety as a NMF, Barretts Honors College at ASU.

If really high stats, merit money is a possibility at Scripps College.

Might look at Holy Cross-very good LAC near Boston.

[Scholarships & Grants | Admissions | College of the Holy Cross](http://admissions.holycross.edu/financial-aid/scholarships-grants)

I will point out once again, Par72, Holy Cross does not provide merit aid, unless you should fall into these specific categories: a Worcester high school student, a music major, a classics major, or a men’s or women’s basketball player. Very limited merit, most of Holy Cross’s FA is based upon need.

Wooster, one of the few schools to require a senior thesis of all students, and Ohio Wesleyan may be worth a look.

[College of Wooster](http://www.wooster.edu/)

[Ohio Wesleyan University](http://www.owu.edu/)

One of my personal favorites is Hope, which wipes the floor with many better-ranking LACs in the sciences and gives reasonably large ($17K) scholarships to NMFs worth about 50% of the cost of attendance (i.e. not just tuition).

[Hope College: Holland, Michigan, USA](http://www.hope.edu/)

OP doesn’t give home state, but I do not think William & Mary is a safety for OOS. Cost is too high.

Ursinus in PA gives generous merit.

west coast - I second Whitman (up to full tuition, esp likes leadership).

south - outside the honors colleges at Bama and ASU, I second Rhodes
UNC - Ashville is relatively inexpensive for OOS.

Trinitiy U in San Antonio has added up to full tuition scholarships, however, this is recent and difficult to get an idea as to who they go to.

This is based on old info. The Greek presence at Denison is dedicated to service and Denison no longer has Greek buildings on campus. They have all been converted into dorms, etc.
