We are having a hard time coming up with safeties. D's current list of schools to possibly apply to include UChicago, Grinnell, Middlebury, Rice, and Pomona. She has the stats to get in, but obviously not a given. Also, most likely NM finalist. She needs some safeties that are financial safeties also. Specifically, she needs merit aid or lower cost schools. She does not like any large schools, so that rules out our state schools. She also does not like any schools with a large Greek presence (like Denison).

Oberlin would not be a safety, but would be another match school to add with merit aid. I realize I don’t know anything about the stats except for NMF, but it is far too competitive a school these days to have as a safety for hardly anyone. They also look for fit.

SDonCC, I’ll amend my statement to say that Oberlin is easier to get admitted to than Middlebury. I know students who were rejected by Middlebury who got into Oberlin. OP gives no stats, so who knows what a safety would be.

Also there should be a whole bunch of perfectly nice LACs in your region that just haven’t become world famous yet. Here’s a link to all of the ones in Iowa: [Iowa Private Colleges and Universities - Iowa Private College Week](http://www.thinkindependently.com/)

Wheaton College (MA) Merit as high as $17,500/year, No Greek Life
St. Lawrence University (NY) Greek organizations do not dominate social scene.

For match schools, look at LACs in the US News 21-40 range or thereabouts, especially outside the Northeast. Some of these give decent merit aid. Also check out women’s colleges. Suggestions: Macalester, Colorado College, Kenyon, Kalamazoo, Smith.

For lower matches and safeties, look farther down in the same list or at public LACs. Suggestions: Centre College, Rhodes, Agnes Scott, Earlham, Hendrix, St. Mary’s College of MD.

I will point out once again, Par72, Holy Cross does not provide merit aid, unless you should fall into these specific categories: a Worcester high school student, a music major, a classics major, or a men’s or women’s basketball player. Very limited merit, most of Holy Cross’s FA is based upon need.

One of my personal favorites is Hope, which wipes the floor with many better-ranking LACs in the sciences and gives reasonably large ($17K) scholarships to NMFs worth about 50% of the cost of attendance (i.e. not just tuition).

This is based on old info. The Greek presence at Denison is dedicated to service and Denison no longer has Greek buildings on campus. They have all been converted into dorms, etc.
