I think it's fine in the campus during the daytime, how about in the night? and how about surrounding areas? which area in St. Louis I have to avoid? Thanks.

The campus itself is quite safe, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to walk outside by yourself at 4AM… Most everywhere else you’d want to go is safe in a group and in the daylight, but use your head. Again, don’t go wandering alone at night and avoid east/north St. Louis, and you should be fine (not like I know why you’d want to go there in the first place)

some people told me south of campus (south of Rt64/40) is not good, and some areas b/w campus and downtown, and b/w campus and airport are not good. I like hike, how about Forest Park?
Thanks for your response:)

That may be, I’m not sure. I’ve never had any reason to go there, so it really hasn’t affected me at all. Forest Park is fine in the daytime, as long as you’re not going to go on midnight hikes, you should be alright.

Echoing RyanMK to some extent- campus and the areas around it are generally very safe, but be smart. North of campus (Delmar, Waterman, etc) is more dangerous at night but feels very safe during the day. Immediately south of campus (Wydown, etc) feels safer in general (and is more upscale neighborhoods) but again, don’t walk around alone at night.

Forest Park is the best!

Like the above posters said, the Wydown/Clayton area is upscale and safe. Other areas are iffy but none around the immediate campus are really unsafe. Basically, just be smart.
Forest Park is amazing! There are a ton of runners, bikers, etc. There are also a bunch of attractions such as the Jewel Box, Art Museum (Art hill=great sledding in winter), history museum, Boat House… And I suggest going to the zoo. It’s free!

Thanks!!!

The “unsafe” part of St. Louis is actually East St. Louis, which is in Illinois. And north of campus — Delmar — is the very lively, very interesting, very safe Delmar Loop, voted one of the most fun & interesting boulevards in the country, and the hub of WUSTL’s off campus fun.

Just like anywhere, use your head. Travel with friends, travel at prime times, be aware, and you’ll be fine.

^ I must say that’s a bit misleading. There are plenty of spots in St. Louis this side of the river which are unsafe. And while the delmar loop is not a mecca of crime by any standard, isolated incidents such as the shooting earlier this season and the armed robbery in the fall do remind you that you are located in the middle of a fairly large metropolitan area. That being said, I do feel safe in the daytime or in a group, and it shouldn’t be something you worry incessantly about.
