<p>When I referred to Southside, I meant below College Avenue, and especially below Telegraph. Elmwood is a safer area, and very attractive, though the closer you get to Ashby, the more iffy it can be at night.</p>
<p>I live in the northwestern part of Berkeley, which means I live in the shattuck/university area. I think it's quite dangerous there and the streets are pretty dark at night. Southside is generally safer in my opinion, but any place that is dark and under lighted is quite dangerous.</p>
