I saw many comments referring to the poor safety near Drexel. Is it true? I am an US citizen studying in India and I think Drexel might be my choice. But, the safety is concerning me. Are there any places near Drexel and any places at night that I would need to avoid?
Drexel and Upenn are pretty safe. Their campus security is very mindful of student safety and making sure the campus and its surrounding stay relatively safe. The surrounding areas can be a bit off putting because like most college housing, the housing is pretty cheap and and not everyone that lives in those places is a college student.
Because both universities are in an urban setting, there are places you should just not go. Those places are going to be typically pretty obvious. All the sudden you are walking down a street with barred windows, barbed wire fences, and there aren’t people walking there. However, those places are off campus and you would have to pretty deliberately walk into them. If you are on campus, you wouldn’t find a place like this going from on campus housing to your classes.
You would need to be mindful if you are in off campus housing that is pretty far off, but its not because you go to Drexel, it is because you are in a major city. That doesn’t change for any school in an urban setting. If you use common sense, chances are you are going to stay out of danger. If you are looking to explore a city without doing any research or picking up on environmental signs, then yes you could be in danger. The only city in the United States you could probably feel 99% safe in no matter what would be Salt Lake City.
Campus Safety isn’t a reason not to go to Drexel in my opinion. But urban universities are not for everyone. Drexel offers a lot of off campus housing and support but at the end of the day, it is on you to be street smart and be aware of where you pick to live, where you walk, and the various “bad” parts of town.
Thank you very much. I would be an on campus student. That wouldn’t be a problem. It was of great help.
