Safety Issue...Units to Library?

Ok...
suppose it's late at night
and I want to go to the library

As a girl...am I in any danger if I will be living in the Units and decide to walk the two blocks onto campus to go to the library for late-night studying/work?

Cal has escort services that will take you both ways.

to add another facet to this question: how dangerous is it really during the night? Is it safe to go from Clark Kerr to the library?

Student stabbed to death on Frat Row, not far from where you would walk from CK to the library.

[UC Berkeley student dies in stabbing - Inside Bay Area](http://www.insidebayarea.com/oaklandtribune/ci_9143357)

The student was waving a knife at a crowd of people but had been stabbed prior to police arriving. 3AM, frat member but not at a frat/sorority party, does not sound like a random attack.

CKC/library is not the safest thing to do but its not extremely dangerous. I’d recommend not doing it the later it gets.

Units/library is generally OKAY as long as its not too late (ie no one else is around like past 11)

the more blocks you get away from campus, the more dangerous it is (since there is a lower percentage of students and less student foot traffic)

That stabbing was the first murder of a UC Berkeley student in 10 years.

whoa. CK is a good distance from campus but I was under the impression the pathway there was pretty secluded. Is it dangerous than to bike to campus from Clark Kerr? I mean is there a lot of traffic during the day or night?

try to walk back with a few friends. but I think anytime before 12 should be okay (at least for unit 3), since I usually see people around campus walking back home.. and of course, there’s always bear walk. CK, yea its kinda far… lol

I would consider Bowles/Stern/Foothill to library and back to be the safest, considering that once you cross Gayley, you are on campus. Campus is significantly safer than Southside.

Try to walk with friends.

I agree with this. It certainly is not very dangerous, you probably could do it 100 times without the slightest incident, but if I were a woman I’d get one of the “escort services” (that can’t be what they call them?!?!?) to walk you or walk with friends.

Though I don’t know about ongoing construction, and my experience was long ago, butthere are lots of quiet places to study at CKC, so you don’t have ot hide in the library to find somewhere to study.

As far as bike riding goes, it’s a relatively safe route from CKC to campus.

Just make sure you have enough locks on your bike and the time to put the locks on/take them off.

from unit 1 to the library is safe. even when its 2am, there are a couple of people on the streets and cops on patrol. but ckc might be too far.

I think unit3 to the library (usually we are talking about doe/moffit here since it opens late) is pretty safe. I can walk back from Moffit to Unit 3 at 1am without a problem.

just work in the laundry room or under the units (ex: in unit 2, work in Towle and Wada - the underground study rooms.

oh yea, there are academic study lounges at the units. Also a study center at unit 3, alongside a computing/tutor center.

Ok…I see that I’ll be ok…

Random question…

since I listed Stern double as a first choice…is there a strong possibility I’ll get it? I can’t see that many girls wanting a double in stern…

It’s pretty safe if you take the right measures. Call BearWalk which can send you an escort to walk you to places around or on campus but they usually have a 15-30 min wait…and are available until 2 am when the libraries close.. or you can take night shuttle buses that run all night long and can take you pretty much all around… these buses also go through the campus.

Yes there is, the housing lottery’s very variable, but you should have a good chance of getting it.

You’d most likely be alright walking to and from the library. However, it is not generally recommended to walk alone. Use Bear Walk.
