Safety,match or reach?

I’m a junior just starting my college search and I’m having trouble grouping schools into safe, match and reach schools . I live in New York State however out of state tuition will not be an issue.

Schools:
University at Buffalo
SUNY Fredonia
Boston University
Syracuse University
SUNY Binghamton
Temple
Penn State
University of Michigan
University of Rochester
Rutgers
Fordham

GPA:3.8
SAT: 1250

I’m a full IB diploma student
I’ve taken 7 AP classes and 5 IB classes
My school is nationally recognized for challenging curriculum and strong academics

I will be the first in my family to attend college

ECs: ~150 hours of community service, dancer for 13 years (ranked 12th in the region), band, key club, mock trial, pre-law club

My intended major is Business Administration

I heard that U of Rochester has declined in last 5 years.

Safety University at Buffalo
Safety SUNY Fredonia
Match Boston University
Match Syracuse University
Match SUNY Binghamton
Safety Temple
Match Penn State
Reach University of Michigan
Match University of Rochester
Safety Rutgers
Match Fordham

In which way? By student profile UR currently places very highly, with a middle-range SAT projected as 1320-1500:

http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/college-profiles-new-sat/

I heard from someone who works there that admissions standards were becoming lower. They were having trouble getting admitted students to enroll.
What is ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■? I’ve never heard of it.
Why do you use the term “projected” to describe the SAT range? Did they make it up?

Colleges have yet to enroll a class based on the new SAT. In order for a standardized scoring analysis to be statistically relevant, it must adjust for format differences.

I feel that your SAT score is pulling you down a bit on your chances, but it will not affect too much. (Just the more competitive schools). Also 3.8 as in UW or W? I will just consider your GPA as W to rate each school.

University at Buffalo - Safe
SUNY Fredonia - Safe
Boston University - Reach
Syracuse University - Match
SUNY Binghamton - Match
Temple - Safe
Penn State - Match
University of Michigan - Reach
University of Rochester - Match
Rutgers - Match
Fordham - Ehhh kind of a Reach but it should be a Match (the reason I say this is because of your SAT score)

@StevoMeepo My 3.8 is unweighted, my school doesn’t provide us with our weighted GPAs so I’m not too sure what it is

@junior0421 Would you care to list your course? Maybe I can weight it for you.

Check out parchment.com – I just discovered it the other day and wish I had months ago. It gives you your chance on acceptance based on past kids who have used the website with similar details. Good luck with your applications!

@StevoMeepo here are all my classes and my current grades:

Alegbra 2/trig: B
IB biology: B+
IB Economics: A-
IB Theory of Knowledge: A
IB Chinese: A
IB Literature: A
AP US History:A+
My school also includes gym and band in my GPA, both of which I have an A+. Not sure if it’s counted in a weighted GPA. Thanks!

It looks pretty strong to me. Senior grades don’t play a part of your cumulative GPA. However, many schools still will want your senior grades so keep it up! Gym will not count but I believe band will. Well if I just weight your senior grades only, it would be 4.57 which is very good. If you want your cumulative from 9-12, I’ll need all the grades. A way to calculate weighted GPA is making all your AP and IB classes out of 5. So an A=5 B=4 and so on. For regular classes it is A=4 B=3 and so on. Some honors are weighted like (H)Chem and (H)Pre-Calc and they are weighted the same as AP and IB. Hope this helps! (:

@StevoMeepo when a college looks at your GPA do they see 4 separate GPAs from all four years or do they see one GPA based off all your classes from grades 9-12? I’m asking because freshman and part of sophomore year my grades were awful and I didn’t take school seriously so that would hurt my overall GPA significantly

@junior0421 Well I know that the UC system does not count freshman gpa towards your grade. They only look at sophomore and junior grades. However, privates and liberal arts schools look at 9-11 grade. (Also first semester senior grade if they request it)

.

Uh, no. The HS defines what weighting is to be used, if any even exists. The only place where there is a standard weighting is for the UCs and CSUs.

What’s your cumulative GPA? 9-11 + first semester 12th grade.

You’re okay for Buffalo, Fredonia, Temple; 50-50 for Fordham, Bing, Rutgers; will depend on major for Penn State.
Everything else is a major reach.

I think Syracuse is definitely a match. Penn is absolutely a reach, and so is Michigan.

Oops nevermind I did not realize the school was Penn STATE.
