Safety, Match question - college list

Another slight flaw in Naviance – at least when my kids were in high school – is that the data points on the scattergram don’t necessarily show the data when the student was accepted but could show the GPA/test score at the time of graduation instead. So if a student has a bad case of “senioritis” and that student’s overall GPA slips a bit, the resulting data point can be a bit misleading as to what an admitted student had for GPA at the time of application/admission.

Also, I think that the scattergram points comprised historical data for the most recent five-years of data (at least when my kids were in school). Over time I noticed a slight shift among more recently admitted students from our high school towards having higher GPA/test scores at a given college or university than admitted students whose GPA/test scores were older – perhaps reflecting a tightening up of admissions standards at those schools.

Say we plan to apply to 10 colleges . 2 reach , 2 safety, 6 match ( applying the percentages you mentioned). We are in California. Would you consider all of UC system as one app/college and apply to 9 more? or UC Davis counts as one college, UC Santa Cruz counts as one etc?

You have me at a disadvantage; I do not know how UC system applications work, so I cannot offer you any meaningful advice. I’m sorry! But I’m sure that others here on CC could probably be helpful on this point.

N UC campuses counts as:

  • N colleges applied to.
  • N application fees.
  • 1 application’s worth of effort on the part of the applicant. (And no application dependency on timely efforts by the high school, since no recommendations are required and school records are self-reported, to be verified by final transcripts at matriculation.)

Hi @Mwfan1921 - After this thread, I have been learning more about Auto Admits. Reading up on this, I have a question. Is Auto Admit meant only for in-state or available for out of state students as well. e.g. Univ of Texas or Univ of California - do they have auto admit offerings for out of state students too? ( with different required GPA/Score etc? Thanks

California UC’s do not have Auto Admits for in-state or OOS/International students. UC’s offer the top 9% of CA HS applicants a default campus (UCMerced) if they do not get into any of their choice campuses if room is available. California Cal states give priority to CA applicants within each Cal State local service area. Competitive/impacted majors are not guaranteed as is my understanding for Texas schools also.

This is good to know. Thank you @Gumbymom . hopefully room is available somewhere. One of the questions I got from my D22 recently was “what if I don’t get into any college”. I think with auto admit as well as having a good set of safeties and good safety, match, reach balance in the mix, that concern will be addressed. Thanks again. Appreciate the info.

Thank you all for the information and pointers. D22 is going with UC Berkeley ( college of letters/ science - with plans/hopes of pursuing economics and few related topics). Thank you.
