Safety of an off campus apartment

For any of you who know the area could you please tell me how safe 2833 Napoleon Ave would be. Im thinking of renting an off campus apartment there and am concerned that it is so close to South Claiborne. Is this area safe? (you can look up the exact location on google maps). Thanks in advance

“Safe” means different things to different people. But if you’re looking for a generic response, I’d suggest finding something significantly closer to the Tulane campus.

I’d like to see you closer to the campus also, at least between Jefferson and the school. You’d be within the roaming grounds of Tulane and Loyola security/police and you would also be among many other students coming and going.

I did google crime maps for New Orleans and the incidents reported where you are moving to were small in number and not violent in nature. so that’s good.

you can use this map to look up crime near specific addresses.

There tend to be SO many options closer to the campus. My S rented a place at Lowerline and Zimpel which was on the other side of Broadway but a very quick bike ride and 5 minute walk from The Boot. It wasn’t perfect but worked out very well for he and 3 roommates.

When I went down there to take him some furnishings, I noted many many apartments in the large homes around there, so many it kind of surprised me. It’s worth it to be closer for safety reasons, to be sure. But the convenience is also a huge factor. Plus it’s nice to still feel part of the campus community without living right in the middle of it.

I agree-- thats a bit far. My s rented on Palmer, not too far from Reilly, but he still plans to use his bike a lot.

I forgot to mention that I am taking my car. So travel will not be a problem. I am basically just interested in the safety of the area

It seems to me that makes it even safer. Normal precautions should suffice.

Do you have a parking spot paid for in the parking deck? Parking has become a real challenge.

Parking deck? At Tulane? Are there usually not many spots to park at there? What about the garage where guests and parents park?

Parking deck = Diboll parking garage back by Reilly.

is there any other place that I would be able to park? Otherwise what should I do to obtain a pass and about how much does it cost

[Tulane University - Traffic Office](http://tulane.edu/publicsafety/traffic-office.cfm)

last years fee schedule for parking permits (a little hard to follow, if you ask me) http://tulane.edu/publicsafety/images/PermitCosts2009_2010_2.jpg</a> I believe its around $575/yr.

no other place a little further to park for free?

No guaranteed parking. There are side streets but a lot of the students who live there will gave cars on the street. Thats why my s is living close enough to walk/bike (plus he isn’t taking a car to school)

from a recent parking survey:

http://green.tulane.edu/PDFs/Gray_Students_Replies.pdf</a> So it doesnt look like you’ll have too much trouble finding parking on a side street

tulane is extremely dangerous…just look at their crime report and see for yourself

[Tulane University - Off Campus Reports](http://tulane.edu/publicsafety/off-campus-reports.cfm)

I looked…what do you mean by “extremely dangerous”? Most of the arrests and incidents relate to public drunkenness, trespassing, stealing a laptop left unattended, etc…no different than any other urban colleges. Do you think the number of incidents in and around campus is any different than other city universities such as NYU, Columbia, U-Penn, GW, BU, U-Miami?

Tulane is one of the very few schools that actually publish on their website all on campus and off campus incidents, so on first appearance it does look alarming. Believe me, students feel safe on and near campus. Of course, if you go wandering around by yourself at 3:00 am in the morning coming back from the bar, “under the influence” and by yourself you are looking for trouble. Like any other urban campus, you have to be smart.

no they are primarily robbery, rape, burglary.

The link says those are crime incidents reported to Tulane, Loyola, and/or the New Orleans Police Department. (Please take note of the time, day and location of the incident.) Do we know how many of these occurred within a few blocks of Tulane and Loyola? Are there newer stats available? These look like they are a year old.
