Safety on campus

Can students attending UMBC comment on campus and surrounding area safety? How does it compare with the College Park campus which is located in PG county?

I was told by a mother whose d is attending UMBC that ONE of the reasons that her d picked UMBC over UMCP was campus safety. Apparently, they picked up copies of the campus newspapers and noticed that crime report for UMBC was a fraction of what was listed for the UMCP campus.

My ds is now applying to both colleges and will have to weigh the safety issue too. I wonder if the types of crime report is different as well as the incidence number. I hope to check out their security report when decision time comes.

We visited both schools in July for my daughter; remember, College Park is a suburb of DC and UMBC is in a much more rural area. Check out the crime thread on the UMCP site; it is informative, and may allay your fears.

I know a lot of people that go to both schools...it never occurred to me or my parents to even consider safety as really being part of the decision. And not because safety isn't important, but only that most schools seem pretty comparable in that I would lock up my stuff and not walk alone at night in ANY situation. Same goes with friends' parents, guidance counseleres, etc.

That says something to me personally, but yeah...whatever floats your boat, etc. etc. I guess I have always been pretty conscious about that kind of thing, so for me there wouldn't be more of a safety danger at UMD vs. UMBC...at least not significantly. I wouldn't be taking any chances at either.
