It could be impacted by an unbalanced male/female ratio among applicants, the need to fill spots on lots of sports teams (or an orchestra or whatever), a commitment to low-income or URM students which cannot be met through acceptance of students in the upper ranges, the need for geographic diversity, etc.</p>
