Like many others, I know my dream schools and its not like it is a stretch for me to get in there. However, I need to find myself a safety school or two that are fundamentally similar to my top choices. I’m majoring in Communications

My top school is definitely Boston College. I applied EA and would absolutely love to go there. Villanova is a distant second, as nothing compares to BC. I’m also looking at Notre Dame, but that will be a stretch. As safety schools, I’ve looked at John Carroll and Loyola College in Maryland. I live near Buffalo, NY, so maybe something a little bit closer? Thats what is turning me away from Loyola. I’m also a sports fanatic so I’d like it if it were a D-1 school with a good sports program.

Suggest touring College of the Holy Cross, 30 miles west of BC and also Jesuit. Oldest Catholic college in New England and on the top ten list of most beautiful college campuses in the USA per 2009 Princeton Review. Top ranked Catholic liberal arts college in USA per USNWR.

Holy Cross wouldn't be a safety. If you are looking for a safety, try St. Joseph's in Philadelphia. (You might get lots of merit aid as well.) My S's dream school was Villanova and he applied to Fordham, Providence College, Loyola College of Md, Xavier, and St. Joes. I tried to get him to look at Marist and Farfield, but he wouldn't. BTW, he got into all of them. So, maybe you, too, can get into your dream school.

Dear cohen139 : My first reaction was Holy Cross, but some have suggested that this is really not a safety school. Holy Cross is about 30-40 points softer in the SAT midpoint (two way) expectations which does not really make it safety, but if you meet BC's midpoint, Holy Cross would certainly be more safe than BC. Smaller total class size also which might be a consideration.

Providence is an excellent safety school, similar in distance from Buffalo as BC. You might find that St. John's is a disappointing choice based on campus and location, so buyer beware on that one. Fordham in the Bronx is a nice school (academically between Holy Cross and Providence) in a not-so-great overall area. Fairfield is also a very safe choice, safer than Providence. Marist is academically the softest in my listing but in a wonderful setting on the Hudson.

Two new suggestions to consider would be Iona and University of Vermont.

Well Boston University is in the same general area, and while it's probably not a safety for someone who isn't a lock at BC, it's significantly easier to get into. Try that. And DePaul, as mentioned above is a solid school (I live in Chicago and know tons of people there) but it is a huge step down from BC. Definitely a safety, but not comparable to BC.
