Can You recommend some safety schools for an international student with SAT scores of 2010 , doing the IB diploma with the most rigorous subjects and has a good ECs that can be called stellar.

GPA/Class Rank?

He would be in the top 10 in his school which has around 400 students in his grade. He has a GPA of 3.8 ish

Financial need? Location/size/major/other preferences?

We will be able to pay for a public school without financial aid, the college needs to be ranked quite well, I guess that’s it. There are no other preferences

Public and Privates cost almost the same for international students.

When looked at college websites there was a difference of $10k between private & public universities.

Actually, it depends on which public and which private.

However, schools in both categories that are “ranked quite well” are often the ones with the more expensive list prices. (And what does “ranked quite well” mean for this student?)

What about schools in the country of citizenship or residency? Also, what intended major?

So can you recommend some universities? I do not really know much about U.S universities and I just started researching recently. We are worried that he is only looking at reach universities( Cornell, brown, UCLA). We just want to be sure that he applies to at least one safety so that he doesn’t end up doing a gap year.

It would be helpful if you could give us a little more to go on. Major, large/small campus, warm/cold weather, urban/more rural, etc. There are just too many schools around the country for our recommendations to mean much w/o more input.

Full pay makes it easier. With need, it 's a problem because very few US universities are need blind and meet need for international students. The competition for the dollars is fierce.

I suggest SUNY Buffalo with a base price of $30K, with more for the travel since the student is international. Pitt for another $10K to make it $40K. Both schools have some merit money available.

he would prefer a hot weather, a larger school would be better, he intends to pursue mechanical engineering and our citizenship is Indian. The fact is that these factors do not matter if he gets into a good college.

Hi there,
I’m actually an Indian looking forward to apply to US universities this year. Did you study the IB syllabus. If not, which one did you study. And what’s your preferred major? What colleges are you applying to? Any questions about local stuff, I’ll be happy to help. :)

Arizona/Arizona State

For engineering look at Georgia Tech with a total COA of $43k estimated for next year (currently $41.5k), ranked 3rd for mechanical engineering. U Illinois, 5th for mech’e, $50k for internationals (although not very warm). Purdue U, 7th mech’e, $45k international students. U Texas - Austin, 8th mech’e, $50k. Rankings absolutely are not everything, not even close to the top criteria to look at, however since you may not be familiar with some of these schools it gives you some context of their reputability in engineering education.

@Indiestudent - I am doing the IB diploma itself. I will be applying to Cornell, Brown, Penn, Penn State, UCLA. I am taking the SAT again so I might apply to HYP if my scores are above 2100. So I am looking for safety schools now

And Thanks for Your replies

Please Chance Me, for the colleges if you can. :)

@Indiestudent : My dad is from Kerala as well, though I was born in Chennai

You have a good chance at all the schools except U. Illinois, U. Michigan and Georgia Tech.

I feel that you can improve your SAT scores, having a good interest for poetry writing I think you can increase your scores drastically if you do some practice tests. Even I, just an average Indian guy, could improve by 300 points in both writing and C.R.

If I were you I would take the SAT again in the summer break after your grade 11 exams and don’t forget about subject tests.

I’ve read a few websites. They said that writing and CR scores could be waived. Idk if its true. I can’t repeat the SAT due to time constraints. :/
