Does anyone know any good academic "safety" schools on the East Coast? I'm applying to schools like MIT, Cornell, Brown, Boston University, John Hopkins.

What are your stats? Intended major? Social interests?

I intend to major in biotechnology/biomedical engineering.
I don’t really want to post my whole resume up here, but if this helps: a school like MIT would be a “dream/reach” school for me, and BU would probably be somewhere between safety and dream school.

Can’t you at least give us test scores and grades?

Assuming you have decent scores, U Pittsburgh might be a good choice. They have an excellent bioengineering program. Of course, Pitt may be more of a match if your scores are low.

Well, here are some numbers: I have 2260 cumulative SAT score, but I plan to retake (hopefully for a 2300). I have a 4.2 weighted GPA (out of 5.0) and I am in the top 4% of my class. I’vetaken AP Calc, WH, English Lang, Comp Sci, French, Psych and gotten 5’s on all of them. I’m a national merit semifinalist.

In that case, Pitt is a probable safety and I affirm my recommendation above.

While I would expect you to get in at Pitt, do you have an absolute safety (where you know you can get in and afford it)? That is essential as well.

I agree with University Of Pittsburgh

University of Maryland

I don’t really have an academic safety, thats the problem. I was told that BU would be a safety school for me, but after doing some research, I’m not sure about that.
Are there any other schools besides Pitt which you would recommend? And out of a list of 10 colleges which I am applying to, how many should be “safety” schools? Right now, I think my list (with MIT and Brown) is skewed towards the reach schools.

I would also strongly recommend U Utah. They have top-notch bioengineering and very low admission standards.

As to your second question, it really depends on you. If you have a safety where you KNOW you can get in, succeed academically, and be happy, that alone might be enough. If you prefer having a choice, apply to more safeties.

Do you need FA or not? If not, University of Rochester is a perfect safety; if so, it’s less perfect, but still doable dependent on how much assistance your family’s financial situation necessitates.

What is your home state?

I’d prefer not to go to my state school; that is why I am looking for East Coast safety schools.

Thanks for all the responses. From what everyone is saying, I guess UPitt is a good option for me.

Also, I’d just like to clarify: is BU a safety/match/reach for me? I’m kind of confused about that. If its a safety, then I don’t think I will worry about applying to UPitt.
