Lehigh has a big Greek scene, so that’s out.

thnkas for all the feedback! you can see all my stats on my sats profile!

I would hesitate to call a school (Pitzer) that had an acceptance rate of 22% this year a “safety”.

to everyone who keeps on suggesting UDel.. yeah its a great state school and would be a nice safety for this student (would prob get a huge merit scholarship) but it is a BIG party school. lots of drinking almost every night of the week and everyone i know who goes there is a partier. if that doesnt bother you then im sure you can find some people who would be more to your interest but just know that..

lehigh has a huge frat scene too. BC would be a good match considering we have no frats what-so-ever. i also second the fordham nomination.

maybe try bucknell in PA, university of vt? (im not sure how big it is), if have nothing against catholic schools then you might like holy cross too. this would be a big safety for you but st. joes right outside of philly. villanova right in the same area (again, if you dont mind catholic schools)

Bucknell is somewhat quieter than Lehigh, but I believe the Greek scene is important there as well.

Of course, on any of these party campuses, you can usually get into substance-free housing if you really want to be away from it all.

beanieboo -

Thanks for the info on UDel. I attended several years ago, and it didn’t seem any better or worse than most other schools. Maybe I didn’t get out much, or things have changed. In looking over suggested schools, it’s amazing how many are Catholic. If that doesn’t bother the OP (and I suspect Catholicism is worn pretty lightly by most of these schools) there seem to be several that match size, location, and would be safeties. If it does bother the OP, the list gets trimmed down pretty quickly. The University of Vermont has about 10,000 undergrads, but for an OOS costs about $38,000 per year.

Saint Louis University

dont mind catholic at all-im episcopalian!
would american be a safety?? ive been considering it for a safety pretty heavily, but one of my friends whos going 2 stanford in the fall got rejected… so i was rethinking that classification…although she ahs lower grades and scares then i do.
also, i’ve figured im pretty ok with big cities just not nyc (2 big!!! and intimidating!!!) atlanta-obviuosly (also just so much smog and sprawl and all the wrong values) or hard-core l.a.

is unc safety for outta state?

American has gotten much tougher in recent years (and it has some programs that are better than Stanford’s), but I still think it is likely a safety for you.

There are a small number of off-campus frats. The campus is officially dry - which doesn’t mean there isn’t any drinking - but it is quieter in that department than a lot of campuses these days (think GW, or especially, a place like Lehigh). Very engaged student body.

No, UNC is NOT a safety for out-of-state. Like UMich, I’m not even sure it’s a safety IN-state.

You have a friend going to Stanford who has lower grades and scores than you AND who got rejected from American? That’s pretty unusual.

Certain schools are known to reject applicants who seem likely to go elsewhere (i.e. Skidmore), but American does not have that reputation.

I’ll reiterate what a few others have said: Lehigh and Marquette can be BIG party schools…

Now that I see you wouldn’t mind a Catholic school, I’ll say one more time that DePaul might be a good safety for you and that DePaul is really great. When we visited, I really was not expecting to like it, but my daughter and I were both really impressed with it. If you have any chance to do so, go to Chicago and visit DePaul.

Also, I see you don’t want a school that is super conservative or preppy. DePaul is not conservative or preppy! It is Catholic, and I’m sure there are some conservative kids there and some preppy kids there, but if you visit campus, it looks like there is a fun conglomeration of all types of kids with all types of political views and all types of styles.

And I think you would get good merit aid there. Go to their web page and check out the test scores needed for merit scholarships.

UChicago sounds perfect, though not a safety.

thank you all for this great feedback! This is already better than all the advice my college advisor has given me combined!!!

You might also take a look at Syracuse and the U of Rochester as possibilities.

Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland would be an outstanding safety for this student provided weather is not an issue. It’s certainly not southern, but I think it fits all the other criteria (if I remember correctly).

thanks for the feedback! uroch is definitely one of my top picks already, i just have to visit, but i wasnt sure if it would be a safety or not.
right now im planning to ed at brown, and apply regular at princeton uroch and american (havent visited uroch or american yet though)
im also considering applying to maybe

williams
upenn
unc chapel hill
case
carnegie mellon?
st andrews
maybeeee washu
yale
dartmouth

then maybe gor laughs, harvard. but probably not…

i just wasnt sure about case b/c i’ve heard mixed reviews of the student-happiness level and adminstration/faculty

and i might look at vassar b/c so many people who like brown seem to like iut but im not sure…

also i get mixed up. whats the diff btwn depaul and depaw?
