Safety Schools for an Ivy League Candidate

I am applying to Brown, Columbia, Georgetown, Boston College, and Carnegie Mellon. These schools are all very difficult to get in to and I don't have any safety schools on my list. I would like to apply to at least two safety schools in the event I'm not accepted anywhere, but cannot find any that are right for me.

I was thinking maybe Villanova and University of Pittsburgh.

Does anyone know of any medium sized schools that would be safeties for an ivy league candidate? I would like to stay in the northeast or mid-atlantic if possible.

Thanks for your help!

Syracuse, Binghamton, UMass, Vermont

Pitt is definitely a good choice, although if you are OOS you might want to try your in-state flagship as well.

University of Rochester is usually a safety for Ivies. It is still competitive, and a great school.

Wake Forest.

Wake Forest isn’t northeast or mid-Atlantic. Perhaps more matches than safeties, but Lafayette, Lehigh, Bucknell.

all good suggestions above me.

also drexel, trinity college in hartford, and fairfield u came to mind

Just a heads-up: Be sure to include a financial safety as well.

The traditional choice is SUNY-Binghamton

I second U Rochester and Syracuse

Holy Cross.

Damn, I wish I could use that as a safety.

was accepted to Binghamton but declined. is it a good school? or a good backup school?

^both. it’s a great school and many ivy-hopefuls like it as well, plus the fact that it’s a public so a little cheaper than most

Same situation, except any from the midwest/pacific coast? =D Thanks!

Holy Cross, Bucknell.

I think that this is potentially a very useful thread for students with Ivy dreams. It’s always good to have a backup plan as the competition of recent years has shown us just how tough it is to get into these and other highly ranked colleges.

Clearly the place for one to begin a search for safeties is with their IS public option(s). I’m interpreting your name to mean that you’re from Michigan and thus probably familiar with Michigan State. While that school is not frequently used as a backup for the Ivies, the other major public option of U Michigan is.

As for other options for backups, have you looked at U Maryland? It’s a little bigger than you mentioned, but the school is on the rise with an increasingly competitive student body. In addition, while they are not located in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic, Tulane and U Miami each have a history of attracting students from those regions. If you’re willing to consider the South, I would suggest considering those colleges as possible safeties.

Here is how the four mentioned colleges compare on some relevant statistical measures that are commonly used in comparing colleges:

Fuse1921- not sure about your major preferences etc, but pacific ivy low match/safeties: pepperdine (probably more matchish), occidental, chapman, loyola marymount, pitzer, univ of san diego

Fordham. Go to an Ivy for graduate school.
