@blountwil2 A student just called us from UCF in Honors for NMF! do you know anyone who goes there for Comp Science?
@2sunny I don’t know anyone in particular, I’ve just heard mostly anecdotal evidence that the program is well respected. However they do have a ton of large companies in the area that could set you up with an internship/job fairly easily.
Great point @blountwil2. Looking at the number of companies around a safety school is a great way to search for good safties. Especially in CSE
Since your daughter is applying to Berkeley and UCLA, she should also apply to UC Irvine, UCSB, UC Davis, UCSD, UC Santa Cruz. Same application, just check the box and pay the application fee for each campus. These are all good CS schools–UCSC would probably be a safety admit for in-state, not sure how that works for OOS. Would be pricey as OOS, of course.
@mathmom did son go to RPI? We applied to many choices for comp science.
Need to narrow down choices, in late March.
@2sunny he ended up at Carnegie Mellon. RPI has added programs since he applied and is even more attractive I think especially for certain subsets of CS. (My kid does obscure stuff with Linux.) I’ve known a couple of kids who went to RPI - one in biology the other in engineering. The biologist is getting her Phd from Cornell. The younger one is working.
@mathmom my son applied to Carnegie Mellon. He applied to CS and Engineering colleges.
also a Merit Finalist for state schools and scholarships!
