I need some suggestions for safety schools. If you need clarification on anything, just let me know. Thanks.

What state are you in?

What is your likely major?

How much will your parents spend? If you don’t know, ask.

If you have a non-custodial parent, that can also make a difference since some schools will consider his income/assets. So, if you have a NCP, will he contribute?

if your parents won’t pay “full freight”, then do you know if you’ll qualify for financial aid?

since most safety schools do not give much financial aid, if money is an issue, then you’ll need to look at schools that will give you large merit scholarships.

how did you do on the PSAT?

Make sure you take the ACT as well.

I am a resident of Maine.
I will probably major in Political Science and Government.
My parents are not wealthy, and tell me that they will be able to pay a negligible amount; they will probably pay only for my books and meals.
I didn’t do great on the PSAT; around a 211.

By the way, I really appreciate the help

Hi,

Maine’s cutoff has been around a 213 in recent years, so check your answer sheet for your exact score.

My parents are not wealthy, and tell me that they will be able to pay a negligible amount; they will probably pay only for my books and meals.

That is rather vague. The problem may be that they earn enough to have a higher EFC than they can pay. Are they low income? middle income?

if their income is low enough, then you might qualify for a small Pell grant. also, do you know if you’d qualify for any state grants?

Anyway…since they can’t afford much, then you’ll have to CAREFULLY select safety schools that will either give HUGE merit scholarships (at LEAST full tuition) because smaller scholarships will leave you with gaps. There may also be some lower matches that give full aid. hopefully, someone here can recommend some.
