Safety schools in New York

The thread title. I just want to know what you guys would consider general safety schools in New York state, preferable the city. I've looked up both CUNY and SUNY, but I can't decipher which ones are easy to get into. Where I'm from, there's automatic admission to in-state colleges, but since I'm moving to New York, now I have to tackle a different beast.

any CUNY school should be a safety if you have a 3.5+ (maybe even a 3.3+. but be warned, the honors program at the CUNYs is way harder to get into). depending on your stats, SUNYs can be anywhere from safety, match, and reach, so if you told us your stats we could probably help you better

3.23 cumulative GPA, 33 ACT composite (32 Math, English (8 essay), Reading; 34 Science), BAD junior year (< 3.0), decent sophomore year ~3.4, excellent freshman year (4.0) 4-AP English, 4-Euro History, 4-Psychology, 3-US History, good extra curriculars

Pace University, Hofstra are great schools. CUNY Staten Island is easy to get into. CUNY City College is the flagship and is hard to get into of you apply late, so apply early. The SUNYs and the CUNYs are your best bet. SUNY University of Buffalo and Albany are great schools that aren’t a challenge to get into.

Can you turn the trend around this next term? Is money an issue and do you want to pay OOS rates for a CUNY?

hofstra and pace?? definitely not good schools and a huge waste of money. plus they’re public, which is what the OP is asking for.

you should try basically any CUNY you want and then for SUNYs, try oswego, plattsburgh, albany, buffalo, cortland, fredonia state, and cobleskill. buff and albany might be reaches

CUNY schools are not hard to get into but don’t have the best reputations for academic or student life. SUNY’s are a much better bet in my opinion, even though they are not in the city, they provide a much better college experience. You might want to consider Buffalo, Albany, Oneonta or New Paltz depending on what you want to major in and what location you feel the most comfortable with. Visiting is the best option to finding a good fit. However, none of these are real safety schools…more like matches for you. If money is an issue, they are very cost effective.

Since you’ll be moving to NY, you’ll have to pay OOS rates, won’t you?

A safety school is one that you know that you can afford.

Do you have all your funding for college?

The SUNY’s and CUNY’s are dirt cheap for OOS students.

SUNY schools would cost you about 13-14,000
CUNY schools will cost you about 11 -12,000 and they have dorms in the city.

^ Those numbers are just for tuition. Add on Room, Board, etc.

For someone who doesn’t have money, paying $11k - 14k per year **PLUS ** books, room, board, transportation, and any fees/misc is not “dirt cheap”(over $23k per year).

SUNY Buffalo COA for an OOS student is over $28k. Where would such a person get the money? http://src.buffalo.edu/financialaid/undergradcost.shtml

I know that if my kids didn’t have financial support from parents and scholarships, there is no way that they would be able to pay this so-called “dirt cheap” cost.

If he’s moving to NY with his parents now and graduating from a NY HS, I believe he would be granted instate tuition. The SUNY’s generally don’t hassle people about residency and instate tuition is only $4970 (fees vary by campus but are generally around $1000).

There are so many SUNY’s to choose from - from small LACs to very large universities. Their admission standards and scholarship requirements vary greatly. I’d recommend visiting the SUNY website where you can see a map of them and search for programs you’re interested in.

[suny.edu - The State University of New York](http://www.suny.edu/)

For CUNY schools, start here:

[Welcome to CUNY - The City University of New York](The City University of New York)

It is cheap. Adding room and board stills makes it cheaper than other State Universities. Many State uni’s cost over 20k and that isn’t with room and board. Why do you think SUNY’s and CUNY’s are called the best value for oos students. And SUNY’s give many scholarships to oos students who have great achievements. That tuition plus books and everything can go less than 20k a year making it very affordable. If you guys are gonna tear me apart actually do a little research. From what I know many SUNY’s do what kids from different states. And the OP can go to a private if tuition will be a problem, they give great aid and scholarships like Pace and Hofstra that are great safety schools.

The point is me [potentially] being an IN-STATE student. I’m going from single parent to single parent here too, keep that in mind. Thank you for all your help thus far!

^^ Toxic, noone is disagreeing with the recommendations, just the wording you used.

OP, will you be moving to NY during HS or after?

@Erin’s Dad: I’m moving for my senior year in a couple of weeks. Right before school starts.

Then you will be in-state for NY schools which will make them more affordable.

You should apply to Macaulay Honors College at CUNY. That way if you get in, you have some good benefits to whichever school you pick. If you dont get in, you will probably get in to the regular CUNY school (likely the honors program)

Honors programs at lower-level schools would be good safeties. Adelphi you will need to be interviewed, Hofstra, Pace. you should get merit $ from these

Fordham and NYU, judging by your stats, you’re most likely to get into. Better schools but more costly

Don’t feed the ■■■■■■.

NYU is definitely not a bad school, it is one of the best. It just has bad financial aid. NYU is also not a safety. 30% of it’s applicants are admitted, which is much lower then Boston University and similar to Boston College.

Also, not all universities are safeties in NY. Columbia University and Cornell aren’t safeties, there reaches. Plus they are the top 20 best Universities in America.
