Safety Schools?

Hello. So in finalizing my list of schools, I was wondering if I have enough safety/match schools?

My safety schools are:

American University
Boston College
University of Southern California
University of Colorado-Boulder
University of Michigan? (is this a safety?)

My stats are:

2280 SAT (800 CR, 800 Writing (12 essay), 680 Math)
730 U.S. History, 720 Spanish

4.0 GPA Unweighted (with most rigorous course load)

For privacy reasons, I don't want to list my EC, but I would consider my extracurriculars much more unique and superior to all other aspects of my application. Also, I have numerous high-level leadership positions within my school.

Suggestions for any other top-notch safeties?

Your Math SAT doesn’t match with your Writing and Reading. Your GPA is great. University of Michigan isn’t really a safety depending on what school you are applying to. What is your major?

I know. It’s strange though. On practice tests I always scored highest on math, and low on reading. I don’t think I’ll be able to get two 800’s again, so I don’t want to retake.

But regardless, I’m not applying into any math related program. I’m probably going to do public policy.

If it helps at all, I got a 35 ACT math?

The schools don’t look at the overall score, they look at each section individually. Even if you are not applying to math programs you want to leave no question that you can excel in college level work. If these are your safety schools I imagine your match and reach schools are elite where applicants will have high scores across the board regardless of intended major. If the schools you are applying to use score choice, and you feel you can raise the math (as indicated by your prep tests), I would recommend giving it another shot. Simply do light review on W/CR and focus primarily on math.

Good luck!

I appreciate the thought, everyone, but I’m probably not going to retake. I would probably only go down.

But the real question was, what are some good safety schools I can apply to other than those already listed? (or why I should not apply to one listed…)

Anyone? Bumpity bump bump

Your stats are pretty good, and if your EC’s are as good as you say they are, you have a good chance UC Berkeley and UCLA, even though I don’t consider them to be “safeties” because they’re both excellent and prestigious schools (I’m mentioning these two because the average SAT is something around 2050).

Some safeties to consider are UC San Diego (great for engineering), UC Davis, NYU… schools like those are probably safety schools for you.

I think you are fine. There is little doubt that you will get into at least three or four of those.

Maybe U of Miami?
My friend’s sister loves it there, or NYU…both good safety schools

Boston college, USC, and michigan I’d say are not safeties. That being said, you really don’t need more than one or two safety schools so you’re fine on that front.

*My safety schools are:

American University

University of Michigan? (is this a safety?)

*

Well, you’ll certainly get into at least a couple of these schools. However, none are safeties if you’re not sure that you have all costs covered.

Will your parents pay full freight for these schools? If not, how are you sure that the costs are covered?

A school can only be a safety if you’re certain that all costs are covered thru ASSURED grants/scholarships, small fed loans, and/or family funds.

What state are you in?

My parents will pay full tuition for all those schools, so that’s not an issue.

I’m from Indiana.
