I read an article on College Confidential somewhere that alot of schools (such as the SUNY's, CUNY's) and other states school are tire of being used as safeties. Is this true? I know coming from a ritzy private school in New Orleans, alot of the grads use LSU as a safety and LSU started rejecting some of our very smart kids because they were tired of being used as a safety. I was wondering if this was true, and which colleges do u feel do this?

hey guys..any response

The classic Tufts syndrome. If this spreads, that could become a problem. I think it is actually wrong of LSU to do that. Of course, it is unfair that no one shows interest in LSU and excepts to be admitted, but what happens to the student who got rejected from the higher-ranking schools and now can't even go to the state school. It would be scary if the underqualified kids got into college and the smarter ones end up at a CC!

is tufts used as a safety alot? i thought that was a really good elite school!

Tufts certainly is a good school, but is frequently used as a second choice for Harvard, Brown, Yale & Columbia applicants.

oh ok. i see. thanks

Most of my friends used the directional michigan schools (emu, wmu, cmu), or michigan state.

I have a friend who was rejected from his safety SUNY Binghamton. He made it into some other good schools but wound up at Catholic U of America with some good scholarship money(based more on merit - but his family has many kids to put through college so he chose what was easier for parents).

Our counselors tell us to show interest (visit if possible, request info packets, interview, etc.) at our safety schools, because we do have a problem with that at schools like Tufts and Brandeis. UMass still accepts pretty much everyone, though...

What UMass Amherst and other schools that fall into this problem do is over-accept. They know by now what their admissions rate versus yield will be, so they'll accept more students than they think will attend - sometimes WAY more, so they'll be sure to fill their entering class with students who are well qualified. Of course, that sometimes backfires. I remember one year UMass ended up housing students in all sorts of odd places, when they had quite a few more students accept admission than they'd expected.

actually...ur soo right. i remember Syracuse over admitted students in 2005 and ended up housing them in the Syracuse Sheraton hotel, which is not bad. the hotel is nice but still. i expect them to lower their admissions rate this yr.

One of my son's friends was admitted to MIT but rejected from Tufts
He assumed it was because Tufts knew it was his "safety"

icekiss45,

Are you SURE the grads aren't exaggerating about LSU? If you meet the core curriculum requirements, you have "Assured Admission" with an ACT/SAT of 24/1090 (or even less, depending on rank in class). That's open and shut.

When it comes to scholarships, I don't think they can play games there either. Their website lists the qualifications for various scholarships. I only saw one that mentioned being "considered" for an award, the Chancellor's Alumni Scholarships (and those being considered already have other scholarship offers from LSU). Don't you go to Jesuit? I know that there were Jesuit of New Orleans students among the 25 competing for those scholarships back in February (3 Jesuit students, I believe, I'll look up the names tonight).

^ i was just saying that alot of kids at my school use it as a safety.

I'm going to GW in the fall, and I'd say my stats are pretty average for the school. However, I know quite a few students from my school who were rejected by GW with significantly better stats than me. They got into schools like Duke, Dartmouth, Notre Dame, and Emory, but not GW. So I guess GW has Tufts Syndrome. They do have a low yield, 34% I believe.

those who are in the top 10% at my school use UT and A&M as their safeties. They also usually end up going there. those not in the top 10% use U of Houston or LSU... sometimes Tech or TSU.
