Safety Schools

Help. My d has done 2 auditions and keeps being told about the enormous number of auditions for only 12 female slots at U of Miami and Ithaca (rejected EA). She's also applying to CMU and Point Park and Montclair. She's got a 3.4 cume and 31 ACT and 2000 SAT. Can anyone suggest a NON-audition, decent school on the east coast that she can apply to? At this late date? She really wants MT.

Plymouth State University in NH is an auditioned BA program with rolling admissions. Wagner College is an auditioned BA program with a February 15th deadline. Both of these are auditioned programs, however. Catawba has a BFA in MT that I believe is Non-auditioned... I worked with a young man from this program and he seemed happy there, but that is all I really know about that program. Rhode Island College states on their website that an audition is required for admission to the Musical Theatre concentration (<a href="http://www2.ric.edu/mtd/theatreProgram_ba.php%5B/url%5D">http://www2.ric.edu/mtd/theatreProgram_ba.php</a>), but their deadline appears to be May 1st.

There are not a lot of non-auditioned MT programs out there, and I think that the deadline has passed for many of them. Soozevt, may have knowledge of some, however?

Good luck!

I've finally found Soozevt's list. It's as helpful as everyone says. Rhode Island isn't on it...so, thanx. Catawba hasn't come up on any of my searchs. I've only just realized that I should have been on this site all fall!
Anyone know about McDaniels or Susquehanna or Rollins. The college counselor recommended them with my d in mind, but no MT knowlege.

Rollins was one of the BA programs my son applied to last year - he is now in a BFA program - when we visited the school with my daughter who was looking at it for different reasons, we were able to see their theatre and really were impressed with that - plus it's near Orlando - I think it's a good option.

Babar - Where is your son in the BFA?

KatMT - Unless it has changed, when we were looking at schools in NC, both Catawba and East Carolina University let you enroll in their theatre programs without an audition, but to get into MT, one must subsequently audition, once at the school in the theatre program. I can't remember if the audition is after a semester or one year or two years, but in the end, you had to audition to get into MT.

Muhlenberg - Common App school, Feb 15 cutoff date

We are from PA and my son has Susquehanna on his list for Acting, as a safety, if he decides he would like to stay near home. It is a beautiful college, though in the middle of nowhwere. Their catologue specifies acting vs. MT (both BA) and it looks like the programs have substance. Susquehanna is much more pre-professional than most LACs. It's Business School is its principal attraction.

Brian, I have heard good things about the music program at Susquehanna. In fact, a young woman of my acquaintance who was an instrumentalist studying at Peabody is apparently transferring there. Also, another singer we know (not a professional, but a very good singer who does it on the side) attended SU and recommends it to people looking for a good, solid program with good training.

I believe that at East Carolina you now have to audition for even the theater program.

Another note re: Susquehanna: Over the past few years some of the students at Susquehanna have been whining because they have been cracking down on the Frats and the drinking scene. This is good news for parents.
