safety schools

i have a 2200 SAT , #3/200 in rank, good grades, good ecs, but need some good safetys, what should i use?

Ummm, state schools and lower privates (Tufts, Carnegie Mellon and such) for acceptance safeties, and at least one of those acceptance safeties you know you can afford the costs at for a financial safety. Have more than one safety so you don't get screwed by Tufts syndrome.

what area of the country do you want? what are you ECs?

apply to your state school

Tufts is NOT a safety. It's just not. Depending on major, Carnegie Mellon certainly isn't either.

A little anecdote-
The kid ranked #4 in my class of 260 with 1540 SATs applied to Tufts. Everything else was in order (ECs, recs, essays, etc.) and we all expected him to be accepted. He wasn't.

You can't ever use a school like Tufts for a safety. Your state school would be a financial AND academic safety. If you don't like your state school, then look at private colleges where your stats place you in the top 25th percentile and the acceptance rate is relatively high.

i live in NY and there seems to be this huge gap between the state schools here and the privates (and i dont wanna go to NYU). could skidmore be a safety?

Yes, and SUNY-Binghamton shoudl be a good safety as well

The Tufts kid probably got Tufts Syndrome.

Tufts and Carnegie Mellon aren't "Safties"

Safties are supposed to be schools that you are virtually guaranteed admission to

schools like Tufts, Carnegie Mellon, Wash U, Johns Hopkins, Emory, and other CAN be safeties. However, some of the schools are known to reject applicants whom they believe won't come. It also depends on your prospective major. If you want to major in Bio, JHU is no longer a safety, if you're majoring in Gender Studies, I think it could be a safety.

One of my friends applied to HYPS, Brown and Columbia this year (all RD) the GC told him that Brown and Columbia could be his safeties. He was accepted to all of them except Stanford, where he was waitlisted.

mid/lower UC's

elizabeth, what you are describing is Tufts syndrome down to the T. They knew he was 'overqualified' and it was probably his safety, so they didnt waste a spot on him.

not to be mean, but there are people for whom tufts would be a safety. and it is very common for schools like tufts to reject kids cuz they know they are being used as a safety and not a first choice. in short, tufts syndrome is not unique to tufts

to answer your question though, what are u interested in? ie math/science vs. humanities. take a look at rice, duke, wash u, u michigan (honors?) i understand where u are coming from, need some safeties ASAP. u maryland, i dunno. what regions do u prefer?

The point is, a qualified student with solid EC's, 1500 (out of 1600) SATs, and a great GPA IS NOT GUARANTEED ADMISSION TO TUFTS

It is not a safety school, period

Certain schools are so selective, and qualified candidates get left out
It's hard to refer to as a 'safety' school
