Hey guys. Everyone seems to be really helpful on this site and I was hoping if anyone can help me out here. I'm a junior in high school and have been looking for colleges to apply to. So far I have found 5 decent reach schools and have toured all 5: Boston college, villanova, university of richmond, university of virginia, and wake forest.
But I'm having trouble looking for schools that could possibly be considered safety schools. The only safeties that I know of possibly applying to are University of MD and suny binghamton (I'm from NY).

So I'm looking for these safety schools to be along the east coast, preferably everything north of south carolina and not in the midwest.
Quick background academically:
3.8 unweighted gpa
4.1 weighted gpa
1870 on my SAT. (i plan on taking more to improve)
top 6% of my class
Looking to pursue computer science or business (still unsure).

Thanks so much for the help!

School’s you’d definitely get in to:

NC State
Virginia Tech
U of Delaware
UPitt
Rutgers
UMass

huge thanks! someone else mentioned to me U. Delaware and UMass. i’ll definitely look into them.

Maryland is probably not a safety, but the list posted above looks good.

“The only safeties that I know of possibly applying to are University of MD and suny binghamton (I’m from NY).”

You need to line up at least one rock-solid “True Safety”. This is a place that you can pay for without any financial aid other than federally determined (FAFSA) financial aid, that will guarantee you admission based on your stats, that offers your major(s), and that you can be happy studying at if you aren’t admitted anywhere else that you can afford. Chances are that your True Safety is one of the SUNYs, or even one of the New York community colleges.

But in order to sort out your budget so that you can find that True Safety, you need to sit down with your parents and run some of the financial aid calculators at [FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans](http://www.finaid.org) and [College Calculators - savings calculators - college costs, loans](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>Calculate Your Cost – BigFuture | College Board) Then you need to talk with them about how much money is available for your education, and where it will come from. Find this out now. Please, please, please don’t be the author of one of next April’s “I just found out that I can’t even afford my Safeties” threads!

alright. my family knows we can afford binghamton, and i know i will be accepted there. so that would be considered my true safety then? I think i would need to find one more then. thanks for the advice.

so maryland probably shouldn’t be on my safeties list.
I’ve looked at TCNJ and URI (parents went there). I think these could be possibly considered safety schools. if anyone disagrees please let me know.

also if you need more info to know me better:
im taking 7 AP’s by the end of my senior year
770 on the math section of SAT
few good extracurriculars
and i kind of rather pick a school that’s into their athletics/school spirit

Try U of Maine. Also, I know you said nothing in the midwest, but from Miami of Ohio is very similar to your reach schools in vibe and academic quality, but its high acceptance rate makes it just about a safety for you.

For school spirit and athletics, try UConn, Penn State, Syracuse.

I know you said you could afford Bing but will your family need aid at those other schools?

Binghamton is definitely not a safety for you, not at all. Get those SAT’s above 2000 and then we can talk safety.

EDIT: Binghamton’s SOM is extremely competitive as it ascends the BusinessWeek rankings, a lot more selective than the overall college. Just so you know.

@ schrizto - i was thinking of syracuse but thats not a safety for me. but i totally forgot about UConn, thanks.

@ erin’s dad - we can afford some, but we might need aid for the $50k schools

and wow VF i didn’t think the Suny school’s were that difficult to get into. thanks for the advice
