Safety Schools?

morris,
You surely already know U Maryland, will be applying EA and you have your own views on its desirability. It would seem an obvious safety.

As for alternatives, many of the larger State Us are not located in a city, but frequently are in “college towns.” The most comparable Division I schools of similar size and selectivity to U Maryland and which have large OOS populations would be

of students, Acceptance Rate, SAT 25/75, % OOS

26493, 42%, 1220-1390, 33% U Maryland

26208, 50%, 1230-1430, 32% U Michigan

30343, 57%, 1170-1390, 36% U Wisconsin

I don’t plan on taking the ACT’s but I just took the SAT’s for the second time on May 1st so I don’t know my scores yet.

I think that now University of Maryland - College Park is going to be my first choice, there are a few schools that I have yet to visit though. I really like the atmosphere of WDC.

Patriot League schools Colgate and Holy Cross have great school spirit and alumni giving rates much higher than BC.

Please check BC’s fine print on early action agreement…I dont think you can apply anywhere else EA if your applying there EA. That leaves out Georgetown and Maryland. It only benefits BC.

Michigan State is your best bet. It has all you mentioned.
University of Michigan may be a reach.

Given your very good GPA, long term EC’s and, scores, I feel confident that 'Bama would be a safety for you. If your scores come up to a 1400 on a 1600 scale you are in line for some awesome merit aid. Even though you aren’t judging a school on finances, I believe that this these scores are also benchmarks for their honors program.

Also check out Auburn, again a bump in your scores would give you a shot at honors that mean a host of benefits within a large school. With your current stats I still feel strongly it would be considered a safety. The OOS tuition can just be a detractor for some people. You may find you qualify for some really good merit aid.
Neither of these schools are in your target area, but they meet other criteria and would be worth a look online to see if you feel they may be worth looking at closer.

Good luck! :)

disclaimer: I don’t work for either school nor do I have a connection in any way. My son is looking at aerospace engineering. We only have two instate schools that offer aero, neither of which are ‘safe’. He will be highly competitive at each, but we will have to look OOS for programs with aero for safety’s. These are two we are considering due to good merit aid.

U Michigan is definitely not a reach for you. Its selectivity is very similar to U Maryland and is the same size with the same mix of IS/OOS students.

630 Morris Verbal

590-690 U Michigan Verbal 25/75
580-680 U Maryland Verbal 25/75

690 Morris Math

640-740 U Michigan Math 25/75
620-710 U Maryland Math 25/75

Villanova is an excellent school . Just outside Philly, has a great basketball program. It may suit all of your needs

This goes back to May, certainly OP is done applying by now!
