Safety schools?

I am absolutely determined to go to boarding school next year, but I'm applying to a lot of the top schools and I'm afraid I'm not gonna get accepted. What schools would you consider to be safety schools?

Well one of my safety schools is Berkshire, but I don’t like referring to it as a safety school because you’re not really “safe” anywhere. There’s no guarantee where I’ll get it because BS’s have become so competitive.

@pandapandaa,
It depends on how well you’re doing academically and how strong your application is. For someone who gets straight A’s and scores in the 90th percentile on the SSAT Portsmouth Abbey would or Kent would be a good safety. But that’s not everyone.

“Safety schools” is a term for those not looking for financial assistance. Just thought I’d throw that in here.

^ Really? I’ll be needing a lot of FA…

I don’t think Kent can really be called a safety school…

@Gabiiwoz,
Kent is an excellent school and I’m not dissing it at all, but Kent isn’t as selective as some other schools are. I heard that the average SSAT score of an admitted applicant is a 70%. And it’s around as selective as Portsmouth Abbey. (Which has a 50% acceptance rate btw.) I didn’t meant the term “safety school” as an insult to Kent. It can be a “safety school” to extremely qualified applicants.

Episcopal, Blair, and Brooks are some of the good schools with higher acceptance rates that come to mind at first.

I thought Kent had an acceptance rate around St. Mark’s (35%).

My grades are pretty good, I have straight A’s and around the 90th percentile on the SSAT.

@2010,
I don’t know what Kent’s acceptance rate is. It’s not posted on the internet. I remember reading somewhere that the average SSAT score of an admitted applicant is around the 70th percentile. Someone like @pandapandaa with striaght A’s and around a 90% on the SSAT has a very good chance of getting into Portsmouth Abbey and Kent, even if she is a FA applicant. And applying for FA does not totally kill your chances.

I’m looking for schools in MA, so Portsmouth Abbey and Kent would be a bit too far away.

@pandapandaa,
I live in MA and my parents want me to go to school in MA. But they say they’ll let me go to Exeter assuming I get in and get a good amount of FA. I’m applying to Kent and Taft just because prep school admissions is so weird that you have to apply to as many schools as you can. As for schools in MA here are the ones which you should consider applying to:
Concord Academy
Deerfield Academy
The Governor’s Academy
Groton School
Middlesex School
Milton Academy
Northfield Mount Hermon School
Phillips Academy Andover
St. Mark’s School
Tabor Academy

Also try to convince your parents (like I have) that if you should be able to go to Exeter. Exeter is fairly close to MA and is a great school. If you’re applying to Phillips Andover you should definitely apply to Exeter. The schools listed above are probably the most well respected boarding schools in Massachusetts. (Btw no offense to anyone if I left out your school, I listed all the one’s I could remember) So good luck!

I have a friend from MA who attends school at LC. LC had a very high acceptance rate back in the day (44%) but I know they dropped it to about 29%… Easier to get into than HADES, but not exactly a safety.

@askjeeves,
Sorry, but what’s LC an abbreviation for?

Loomis . I just saw your previous posts which said you were looking for schools in MA, LC is in CT so that might be out of the question…

@askjeeves,
Ah thanks. But I’m applying to Taft and Kent so I guess maybe adding another school to the CT list wouldn’t be terrible. But even if I get into Taft and Kent my parents probably won’t send me.

I’m definately applying to Exeter becasue I was waitlisted next year. It’s about as far away from MA as I can get.

I’m using Peddie. And Miss Hall’s as backup schools, is that okay…?

Peddie shouldn’t be used as a safety.
