Heyy!

I'm having trouble finding good safety/target schools, and I would really appreciate any help or ideas!

Here's a little bit about me:

Caucasian female

Sat:
2270 (760 m 760 w 750cr)
800 math 2
will take physics in october

Act:
33: 35e34r34m30s (haha oh science standardized testing....)

4.0 unweighted GPA
4.7 weighted

I have a bunch of AP (all 5s), extracurriculars, internship at the NCI-NIH, etc...

I like midsize-large universities that have a college campus feel (not a city school like nyu). I also want the school to have a decent ski club/team, and access to a mountain or winter trips!

Oh and I'm planning on majoring in engineering=) possibly biomedical or aeronautical.

So here's my tentative college list:

Super crazy reach:
-Stanford
-Princeton (scea)
-MIT

Low reach:
-Cornell
-northwestern
-USC (maybe)
-Duke (maybe)

Match:
-university of Notre Dame
-UMich
-UVA (Maybe)

Safety:
-UMD college park

Thanks for all the help!!

Thanks for the thread!

And although I will apply for financial aid, money is not a big issue.

Take a look at Caltech and Harvey Mudd (which is part of the Claremont consortium - five LACs with contiguous campuses sharing facilities and resources). Both on target for your D.

Caltech and Mudd are great schools, but they are reaches for this student, not targets.

Have your parents explicitly said how much they can afford a year? Because applying for need-based financial aid means that money is indeed an issue. Have your parents give you a number, and then have them complete some Net Price Calculators (NPCs) for some of the schools you’ve listed below. Do not let them tell you that they’ll find a way to afford it if you get in. I know this sounds boring and tedious beyond belief, but people here will be able to give you much better advice if we know if you need merit or need-based aid.

I have been looking into Harvey Mudd, but I’m not sure it’s for me. I tend to prefer larger schools so I’m having trouble getting over the size.

My dad is in the military so a lot of my finances will be covered by the GI bill and yellow ribbon program (depending on the school), for example if I get into umich I will go for free… Princeton about 15000 a year, etc. Based on FAFSA and the net price calculators we will receive some financial aid at most schools.

I agree that Harvey mudd and caltech are not safety or match schools, although I would probably have a better chance getting into them than HYPSM, or in my case PSM=)

Thanks for responding!

Glad to hear you’ve had the money talk. Sorry for the panic!

For Mudd, keep in mind that it’s part of the Pomona college consortium. Mudd itself is tiny, but it’s grouped with Scripps, Pitzer, CMC and Pomona. You can take classes at the other colleges; unlike other consortia, the pomona schools are all located right next to each other.

Haha that’s alright=)

I will give harvey mudd some more thought, thanks for the idea!
