Hi - I'm wondering how safe Tulane is. I understand it is in a wonderful part of town. But New Orleans, in general, has a reputation of a corrupt government as well as having a lot of crime. I will research facts and stats but thought I would put this topic out there for comment.

Rice1961: You’re pretty much not safe anywhere. New Orleans like NYC, LA, Houston, etc. has a large population of citizens. The greater the population, the more localized the poverty (esp. since the displacement of large masses of individuals after Katrina hit), the greater propensity for crime. Besides Tulane is situated in Uptown New Orleans, one of the more affluent communities in the area. Just like anywhere else, your son needs to take precautions not to go into a dark alley or walk down a deserted street without a group of friends. New Orleans, despite all portrayals by the media, is far safer than Kingston, Jamaica (which in fact has the highest crime rate in the world).

Hi again Rice. As you might imagine, this has been written about frequently. I think I sent you some of the old threads, but maybe I am confused with another poster. Here are some, it still holds true and if anything safety continues to improve with the addition of more cameras and other measures.

As far as NOLA and corrupt government, I truly believe Mayor Landrieu is a breath of fresh air. Things are already improving and I think will continue to do so. Also, just be careful with crime stats. As I know you know, crime tends to be very localized, especially violent crime. Most of the NOLA violent crime is not close to Tulane. Put even more strongly, little of the violent crime is close to Tulane.

Come on back of you have questions after reading that stuff.

Rice, it is a city – all of the good and the bad.

Funny, my DD just got back from Rice today. Houston is much bigger and therefore all the same rules apply X times NOLA, once you step off campus.

Teach 'em a city face, then no problems.

Rice- in case it helps, here’s my opinion as a female student at Tulane.

While it is true that Tulane is in one of the safer parts of town (if you can call any part of New Orleans proper “safe”), however it is fairly close to less safe neighborhoods.

We get crime reports emailed to us when applicable, and usually it’s someone being robbed right off campus - I can’t think of one that’s happened on campus.

I’ve never felt unsafe ON campus. However, that could be because I’m overly cautious - when I walk across campus alone at night, I am always hyper-aware of how far the nearest blue light is, and more often than not, I’m on the phone with my boyfriend who has the TUPD phone number ready.
I say I may be overly cautious because given the size of Tulane, these walks rarely take more than 5 minutes. (yes mother, I know one minute is all it takes, but it’s better than the 20 that some of my friends at larger state schools have to risk! =]. )

Safety will be an issue regardless of the school - although of course a city like New Orleans does merit some extra concern. TUPD is great though, and Tulane takes its students’ safety very seriously.
