Safety???

Hello all!

I am starting my college search and marylands programs really appeal to me...

however, I have found it a bit 'disturbing' about the 'perieved campus safety'....

I am a female student, and would like to feel safe at a college that I will be spending four years...

Please give me any honest advice/experiences/etc....it would be much appreciated

I am just posting this from a site called college p.r.o.wler (no periods)

UMD got a B+ in safety. These schools ranked lower.

Do you do any of the following:

A) Walk down dark, unlit alleyways at 3:00AM?
B) Purposely avoid walking down main roads?
C) Refuse to walk with friends or in a group?
D) Plan on not taking advantage of police escorts and programs such as Night Ride so you won't have to walk home alone?
E) Approach a group of suspicious strangers?
F) Do any of the above while very intoxicated?

If you answered yes to any 2 of those above questions, then you're probably going to be a victim of a violent crime here at Maryland.

However, if you travel with friends, stick to the lit roads, and just be smart about things, you'll never have anything to worry about. Since you're a female, this is especially necessary.

Heck, even if you don't do these things, nothing is really going to happen anyway. I've walked home alone at all hours of the night in a drunken stupor all across campus, and nothing has ever happened to me as a result of it. Might I be lucky? Sure. But it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Frat Row is safe, over by College, Knox, and Yale is all safe, and on campus is relatively safe.

thank you BigJ and Cheapseats...

anyone else have any insight??

BigJ is right. Most crime reports occur during the night when someone is drunk or alone. It is not hard to find people to walk with and even then there is night ride. In addition, there are "blue phones" which are located all around campus that allow you to immediately call the police if you feel unsafe. Being the devil's advocate, yes there are crimes that occur during the day, but this is PG county -- not the best in MD. There are much more dangerous places to goto school, but at UMCP, I feel safe. There are also safer places, but these places are usually in some backwater area with nothing to do. I was scared of being robbed when I first came here, but now I feel secure. Don't let this control your college making decision. The better question is: do you like the campus and its programs?

Thankyou everyone......

Honestly Im still scared out of my mind.... not quite as much asI was thanks to all of you alls quick responses...

however studentsreview.com is showing lotsof students talking about how dangerous the school is..

broad daylight shooting, mugging, theft, etc......

I dont know i want to go to a place where i dont feel safe running(im a runner) in broad fdaylight.......

I have a lot of soulsearching to do i guess........

Studentsreview is simply put, full of crap.

Do you have any idea of the number of people on campus during the day? There are tens of thousands of students that attend the University. You're not going to run into any trouble in broad daylight, unless it's in a store. Even then, the only stores you really have to worry about are those when you approach I95 (which is where you have crazies coming in off the interstate). On a nice day, there will literally be hundreds of students just hanging out at the mall. People jog, ride their bikes, whatever.

As for the stats, out of approximately 30,000 students, I've put the probability that this happens to you next to the numbers in []:
Criminal Offenses - On-campus 2003

a. Sex offenses(forcible)-11 [0.037%]

b. Robbery-11 [0.037%]

c. Aggravated assault -23 [0.07%]

d. Burglary-148 [0.49%]

e. Motor vehicle-theft71 [0.24%]

f. Arson-2 [0.007%]

And lets see, SAE (a fraternity) has been kicked off campus (where numerous rapes and drug use used to happen). And I'm betting that a majority of those burglary crimes happened at night because people left their doors open.

The only incident I've ever heard of in regards to broad daylight was a bunch of people jacking a car, who were caught within 2 weeks.

It's true, if you go in either direction away from the University, you start running into some sketchy neighborhoods very quickly. But guess what? Nobody EVER goes to these areas. It's a moot issue.

Hell, I've been held up at gunpoint while working in College Park, and I still feel perfectly safe here. I was working at Alario's Pizzeria (bout a 35-45 minute walk towards I95 from Ellicott Hall) when, to make a long story short, I had a gun put to my head and was told to empy the register. They collected everyone's valuables that were there and took off. Nobody got hurt. This also happened as it was getting dark out. Couple of weeks later, they were caught.

As far as the shooting was concerned, it happened around 2 miles off campus. Here's the link to the actual article:
http://www.diamondbackonline.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2006/07/08/44afa3cb1a4ec
Which as it looks, was gang-related.
If you're worried about Campus Safety while in "town" (by Wawa, Bentleys, Cornerstone, etc) The buses stop right at Wawas so you don't have to walk anywhere. On top of that, like I said before, you can call Night Ride.

I'm not saying the campus is a haven from all crime, but I am saying that people vastly exaggerate what goes on on the campus.

Thanks Big J You are exactly right.... studentsrev. is totally out of whack. I read some of the information about other schools I know about and almost had to laugh out loud.

drumnrun, feel free to do "a lot of soul-searching", as you put it.... but i don't really see what the issue is. you like UMD. no matter where you are (and certainly not in college park) you are not going to get mugged and/or shot while jogging in broad daylight. so please don't be scared out of your mind.

drumrun, I don't think you're going to have a problem running on campus in the daytime. The UMCP campus is OK, and the very nearby places where some students live off-campus (such as the places Testudo mentioned) are also OK.

The problem lies a bit beyond the campus area. The surrounding community is, well, sort of downscale. You may not feel comfortable there. But you can probably avoid going there as long as you do most of your shopping for clothes and things when you're home.

If you haven't visited UMCP yet, you should come and take a look. You may be pleasantly surprised.
