is the USC campus safe? I heard that as soon as you
get off campus, you are in a scary part of LA

Good question- we just visited there and didn't feel unsafe off campus. We were given anecdotal info that off campus you just need to exercise basic common sense...it is LA, and like any other major city, I would think you would want to have your wits about you.
However, the headline on the "Daily Trojan" newspaper for Nov. 20 was "Robbery, assault on the rise". www.dailytrojan.com

Of all the times my buddies and I went off campus at 1 am to buy food (at least once a week), none of us has ever gotten robbed.

It's all common sense. :)

There are many threads on this forum. For example:

Visit the school! The school and the surrounding neighborhoods are not in the "bad sections" of L.A.. There is a site: http://www.lapdcrimemaps.org/
that allows you to see how much crime occurs in any given area of Los Angeles.

Thanks for your input!!
^^

i visited sc and before the visit all i heard was how awful the neighborhood was, yada yada yada. i was expecting something quite frightening... but nope i did not feel unsafe at all (and im a 16 yr old female, if that means anything).

On campus there is alot of security. You need a keycard to enter the dorms and a key to get into each room. Some dorms have a gaurd/assistant there at all times. All gates are manned, and there is security all around campus. Off campus is fine too, at least for a block or so imn all directions. The museums and staduim to the South, Apartments/houseing to the North, Appartments to the East (don't go past the freeway though), and I am not too sure about the West, but it should be okay for a block or so.

My S is a freshman there & has never mentioned ever feeling unsafe. He & his buddies frequently go off campus, catching Dart & walking about (none of them have a car). Using common sense as in any city/college campus & you should be fine. Go for a visit, talk with Department of Public Safety at USC & see how YOU feel.

West is generally sketchy, as it is Blood territory for several blocks, but there's usually very little gang presence in the immediate area around USC. I went west on Jefferson past Vermont once and it was kind of unnerving. But I know of a few people who live west of campus, so it's not completely unsafe. Really though, west of Vermont isn't considered University Park campus, and it isn't patrolled by DPS. Most students live north of campus.

The campus is definately safe (I would feel safe walking around by myself 2 in the morning personally) but outside campus... well. Immediate areas are safe but west/east are definately no nos. West is where most people get rob, I heard... Don't go past the freeway by yourself (which might be difficult because that's where the parking structure is) and dont go past vermont for too far..

Realistically, you should never actually have to... Almost all of the houseing is North. And what supplies and stuff you can't get on campus, you should be able to find up North. There is a theater up there too. The only thing past the Harbor freeway is alot of houses. Pretty much the same to the West I believe.

I have never seen a gang presence here, and DPS is everywhere, and they are legitimate armed right-to-arrest cops.
