Are USC and its surroundings safe?

From what I gathered when I visited campus it seems that USC itself is definitely quite safe; the University police do a good job of making sure the campus is safe.

It’s alright within a couple blocks’ radius around the campus but then it starts to get a little shady.

i’m an international here, never visited the US.. so i kinda know nothing about it except from reading and tv.. sorry if my questions are trivial to you guys..
is it necessary for students of USC to wander out of the campus? Can we get everything on campus? USC is in LA, LA isnt safe at all??

Is it possible to transfer to the vertibi after starting off in the CAS?

You will want to wander through a lot of the neighborhood around USC as a student. Restaurants, upperclassman housing, and the ubiquitous UV are all in the area. LA is safe, as long as you are smart about it. There are areas that you shouldn’t be in, but you probably won’t go there anyway. As an international, it is important to understand that LA as a city is very different than other cities in the world. It is huge, and there isn’t really any center to it, other than downtown, where no one lives. It is over 469 square miles large. Thus, you can’t really judge all of the city in one statement.

yeap.. LA is much bigger than the COUNTRY i’m coming from.. so i don really wat to expect if i am ever accepted..

Here are some previous discussions on safety-
