It is getting to the point where I don't even want to read the Cavalier Daily anymore. Today's issue cited the attempted sexual assault at JPA, which Police do not think was related to the attempted armed robberies at the railroad tracks on Virginia Avenue. (prime area for students living in apts, frats and sororities) As a parent, I am stunned at the amount of crime in and around UVA. What appears to be a beautiful, bucolic campus seems to have crime issues similar to those campuses in an inner city. I would urge parents of current and potential students to look hard at crime statistics for UVA and Charlottesville and consider whether this is place for your child. Todays paper highlights only the latest in a steady stream of incidents this year. There appear to be a lot of weapons in Charlottesville (thanks to the Virginia gun laws) and many young adults packing them!

Yes, there is a problem with crime in Charlottesville, but your post is hyperbolic to the point of trollery. And Virginia's gun laws don't have anything to do with it. Don't be foolish.

A few bad apples and the rest get a bad name.

Plenty of people are in those areas 7 nights a week. Stuff happens. News doesn't sell headlines reading "Thousands of UVA Students Survived the Night"...instead, the occasional terrible occurrences blip across the headlines and that's all people care about. I feel safer here then I did at VT, and I see way more police presence 24/7 here than anywhere else.

We have a gorgeous campus and a wonderful city around it. Unfortunately, college campuses in cities can attract people up to no good, who see easy targets (read: students walking alone, sometimes intoxicated, late at night) in the student neighborhood.

The crime stats could be better in Cville, but they're not even close to the stats of some other cities with colleges in them.

It's not like this stuff happens in broad daylight - it's always at 2 or 4 in the morning.

I AM SPEECHLESS, WHICH DOESN'T HAPPEN TOO OFTEN! ;) anyone who is fortunate enough to go to UVA in CHARLOTTESVILLE has been given a gift! i say this an an OOS parent, who has just enjoyed the graduation of her daughter from this illustrious place. her first apartment was right there on Virginia Ave., and it was the beginning of an very important part of her young adult life! crime is truly everywhere, and it is up to the individual student to be smart about it. but to bash a school such as UVA..........?

Hazelorb brings up a good point: most of these happen because these people put themselves in bad positions. I read one story that a guy got assaulted on the Corner in a parking garage, at 2am, which is ridiculous because no one should be hanging around a parking garage at 2am because, well, it attracts robbers! Duh! I know some of these crimes aren't caused because of people's carelessness, and these people don't want these things to happen to themselves, but I would never think about standing around anywhere at 2am, C'ville or not. The University is constantly reminding kids to not leave valuables out in the open at libraries, or hang out shady places at night, walk home alone at night, etc. For those who don't listen, consequences happen. It sucks, but it's true, and shouldn't reflect badly on the school.

Yeah, we should all go to VCU instead where my friends regularly hear gunshots out their windows and have cops outside their building every other night. It'll be more safe!!!

I actually disagree with that, shoebox. It's kind of like saying a woman who wears a low-cut shirt is inviting rape. Students should be able to travel throughout the corner area at all times of the night without having to worry about some heathen townie robbing them at gunpoint and giving them a shiner and a split lip. So yes, students should be cautious, but they should also be able to travel in the area of their university (perhaps to bars and then the parking garage to meet their DD) without fear for their safety.

cav,

thats not a fair comparison. walking around alone in a dark place at night by yourself is inviting problems. wearing a low cut dress isn't exactly inviting problems, unless the woman in the dress is walking around alone in a dark place at night. there are common sense things which everyone should be aware of. it doesn't matter if you're in the vicinity of grounds or not.

one thing most people seem to forget about uva is that charlottesville is not exactly a "nice" town. always keep in mind that something like 25% of the population is below the poverty line, and UVa happens to sit on the edge of that section of town.

i wish i could remember the actual publication, but in fact, C'ville consistently makes high honors as one of America's best towns to live in! this is the point, even NICE towns have bad sections. this thread got me thinking about how many of the top ivies are in HORRIBLE parts of big cities, gunshots included. and rural, remote schools have crime with transients hopping on and off nearby highways. personal safety ultimately is the responsibility of the student.

That was a few years ago, I think CVille is much lower on the list now. Their criteria back then seemed to be favorable with Virginia cities- Virginia has '4' in the top 20 (counting Hampton Roads as 1 city)

ok...thanks for that. but it still has a lot of appeal. my d had toured me around where you all go to foxfields, for example. awesome homes! i'd consider moving there someday, as i'm used to the overpriced northeast!

happycollegemom,

i agree with you on the fact that c'ville has a lot to offer. but I consider the town i grew up in much nicer than c'ville and i don't see it anywhere on the list of best places to live. there are plenty of nice places in c'ville to live, but c'ville is geographically huge, and the part that UVa sits in is on the border of the crappy section.

I wish some alum would step up and donate funds to build a wall w/ turrets and a moat. eyes globalist

^ whole heartedly agree

jags~ i guess i've been "under TJ's influence" ! my d and i were so blown away by the grounds that it's hard sometimes to see the poverty nearby. but at least the kids in Madison house are trying to make a difference. ( i STILL say UVA's grounds and C'ville are far better than...durham, phillie, new haven, etc.)

lol you spelled philly with an ie

She must be a phanatic.

hazelorb~ lol philly!!!! barrons?
