How safe is Buffalo?

The city of Buffalo or UB? North campus is in Amherst and is very safe, most incidents involve theft of unattended belongings (get student insurance to cover theft and don’t walk away from your laptop!). They did have a few muggings on campus last fall, though no one was really injured. South campus is near a low income/higher crime area and it’s best not to walk alone at night. There have been street shootings in that area though not on campus. UB has shuttles running continuosly and will provide escorts and/or transportation at night.

The city of Buffalo is like any other medium sized city - there are good areas and bad areas. On or off campus, common sense and caution should always be practiced…it just makes sense to stay in well lit public areas, avoid sketchy neighborhoods, don’t walk alone at night, and listen to your intuition!

North is probably one of the safest campuses around. South is in the city, but it’s not a bad area. I wouldn’t go out alone at night but there’s certainly enough activity that I wouldn’t feel unsafe either.

Main thing is thefts as sk8rmom mentioned - you read about it all the time, usually it’s people who leave their belongings unattended in a library or something (or fall asleep).

just don’t walk around south alone and don’t be the idiot that leaves their laptop in the library. be smart, use common sense and, although it sounds like something you’d hear in first grade, “ALWAYS HAVE A BUDDY WHEN YOU’RE ON SOUTH AT NIGHT”

As a resident around the south campus all of my life (and an incoming freshman at UB) it really isn’t that bad. As stated before just use common sense/street smarts and don’t leave your stuff laying around. And if you don’t feel comfortable call Campus escorts good luck!

I wouldn’t call South campus “City-like” but would describe it as suburbs of the city.

The dorms are right across the street from a golf course, triplex theater and shopping center. That area seems fine. The streets around another portion of campus are low income and not safe. The kids learn early on never to go there at night and to go as a group and come back as a group from a party, etc…

It seems that after the first couple of weeks the kids tend to stay in the dorm or to North if something is going on and they are not wandering around South looking for parties/fun.

If I had any major fear, my son would not be at UB!!

South isn’t suburbs…it’s in the city. Although it borders the suburbs of Amherst, Tonawanda, and Cheektowaga.

The Main/Bailey area (as crazed said) is good. There’s a movie theater and strip mall, county golf course, etc. The southern end is iffier. The first few streets are a lot of frat houses. Heading further, the Main Street side is generally OK, heading toward and down Bailey isn’t wonderful.

South itself isn’t bad though.
