is it that dangerous...i thought it was suburban...and what happened in 2003...38 rape cases???!!!

That's actually not that bad. I remember hearing some speaker say that, aside from murder/manslaughter charges, the more reported offenses (within reason) the safer the campus. Burglary might very well include bike theft which happens often enough if you don't lock your bike. If you lock the doors to your car and close the windows you probably don't have to worry about motor vehicle theft.

Sexual assault is actually fairly common on college campuses. I recall some statistic that around 1/10 women suffer an assault or attempted assault while in college. (I could be wrong... even if it's 1/20, you'd expect over a hundred women to report an assault)
Stats on sexual assault at Stanford according to Vaden Health Center:
120 students between 1995 to 2001 sought services for a sexual assault
-91% were Stanford students
-84% committed by someone known to the student reporting the assault
-57% involved drugs or alcohol
-33% used or threatened force

My point is that Stanford is no less safe than any other campus. It's probably actually a lot more safe than most. You still should use common sense and lock your doors, close windows when you aren't in the room, etc.

64% occured on campus
14% committed by current or former intimate relationship
at least 52% committed by other students (about 35% appears to be unknown)

Stanford's campus is much safer than any I've been on previously. The combination of the campus size and the surrounding community help that a lot. The thing is, it's important to remember than feeling safe doesn't mean you should be stupid and leave your bike unlocked, or leaving a laptop in your car on the front seat.

That said, my son has been the "victim" of on-campus crime. He left his Xooter in a classroom. When he remembered and went back for it three days later, it was gone. It's never been found, so it's considered stolen. It was silly of him to leave it, and that's what happened. But honestly, compared to UGA, and tons of other campuses I've been on, it's very safe -- so much so that it's nearly a non-issue for most students.

The Stanford campus is very safe as evidenced by the almost nonexistent robbery and aggravated assault numbers. Sexual assaults are common at every college, and like the stats show, 84% of them are caused by someone you know, the majority involves drugs or alcohol, and only 58% of them were actual rapes. Technically, rape occurs when one or both parties are drunk and unable to give consent to sex, which occurs far more often than the "jumping out of a dark alley" rape that many people imagine sexual assault to be. Burglary and motor vehicle theft often occur when students carelessly leave their dorm rooms and cars unlocked. I've seen countless bikes lying around that aren't even locked! I feel that the Stanford campus is one of the safest around. Women feel safe walking around at all hours of the night. A little common sense can go a long way.

After years of leaving my bike unlocked, it was missing the morning of my LSAT (on campus) and I had to walk (trot) there. Good thing I still got a 99th percentile score. I found the bike the next day, but it got stolen for good on the last day of senior year. Good thing it was worthless anyway. No other crime to report, with dorm room mostly unlocked. I can't remember for sure if any dates raped me while drunk. ;)
