Safteys Similar To Midd

So I recently visited Middlebury and LOVED it. Since Middlebury is obviously a very difficult school to get into I was wondering if anyone knew of some schools similar in atmosphere and style to Midd but that are easier to get into. Also if someone goes to middlebury what other schools did they apply to?

I was recently accepted to middlebury and some of the schools that I applied to, yet thought I had a better chance of acceptance (got accepted to all) were: Colgate, Colby, BC and William and Mary. My other schools that were similar to Midd in academics/size were Bowdoin and Dartmouth. I got into Bowdoin as well, but not Dartmouth.

Hopefully that helps. I applied to more, but the ones I listed were most like Midd. If you have any other questions, feel free to pm me!

What are your stats?

I have a 4.0/4.0 unweighted 4.25/5.00 very competitive public high school.

2160 SAT but retaking hoping for 2200+

Big focus on sports and in talks with coaches. 250+ Volunteer hours, work at summer camps for the YMCA

My younger S also had Hamilton and Bates. While it isn’t exactly safety level, he also had Davidson. My older S also had Connecticut College.

Union (once part of the NESCAC), Skidmore, Whitman, Dickinson. Not true safeties, but less selective: Colgate, Hamilton, Colby, Bates, Conn College.

If you are willing to look outside the New England area here are a few schools to consider (some are more safety like than others but it always good to look at everything):

Midwest: Grinnell, Carleton, Kenyon, Denison (with Denison being the most “safety” like)

Pennsylvania: Bucknell, Dickinson, Gettysburg, Franklin & Marshall, Lafayette,

New York: Union, Skidmore, Colgate, Hamilton

None of the schools mentioned are true safeties.

My S was admitted to Williams, Vassar, Wesleyan but denied at Bate. True story.

Closer to a real safety would be Beloit and a school like that.

I agree with Mythmom. Hartwick, St Lawrence, St Michael’s and other such schools would be safeties. Absolutely not schools like Union, Hamilton and the like.

“I was wondering if anyone knew of some schools similar in atmosphere and style to Midd but that are easier to get into.”

I think people here were trying to give the OP some ideas of other schools to consider vs. offering up suggestions of a true safety school (if those even exist in this day). Knowledge of the financial situation for the OP would help to round out the suggestions.

Re: Sportsmom’s post, Carleton is not a safety for Middlebury. I know at least one person that was accepted at Middlebury but not Carleton.

Went by the title of the thread, albeit misspelled.

Any LAC in a different part of the country - different from the Northeast. Look at Kenyon in Ohio. Admission to LAC’s in the Northeast are made more difficult by the demographics - huge numbers, few spots. Look at LAC’s in the midwest - the midwest is losing population - let the population shift work in your favor.

Kenyon is absolutely not a safety. OWU, Hiram, Wittenberg, yes. But not Kenyon, Oberlin or Denison.

ok, ok, agree not a safety, I thought they’d like it - but most important - we’re getting the OP to think about all the great schools in Ohio :)

Sewanee - The University of The South - is a great and beautiful school whose President was formerly the President of Middlebury. It’s campus feels a lot like Middlebury’s. It’s probably a bit more conservative than Middlebury, however.

Take a look at Whitman. As with most LACs, their biggest draw is from their own region, so you’d get a little bounce for adding geographic diversity. The student body is very outdoorsy, active and involved. The academics are rigorous. Walla Walla is not a metropolis, but it is a cozy friendly small city with great restaurants and many amenities within walking distance of campus. The outdoor program is huge!

bopambo, you beat me to it on Whitman! Also not a safety, although for this candidate, it almost is. Walla Walla is an unexpectedly charming town in the middle of a thriving wine country. parents? are you paying attention here?

Yes, my son absolutely loved Whitman when he visited. He ended up at a NESCAC school but was torn b/c he thought Whitman would also be a good, if not better, fit. Subsequently, he had a chance to become friends with a couple Whitman students during his semester abroad which confirmed his initial take…great kids who found a true gem in Walla Walla.

If you like music I would also recommend checking out Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. Magical place.
