saic 2019 early action decisions?

My daughter got Honors Merit at 76K Merit is 10-75K. Then there is distinguished and then Presidential. @ruby2sday - congrats! Can you share the range?

Christmas present arrived today! D received her notification, which includes a total $75,600 award (for all four years). But now she’s confused. Ha!

Can those of you who have gotten your acceptances post your stats? Curious as to what types of GPA/test scores some of the art schools are looking for in addition to portfolio. Thanks.

My daughter was accepted SAIC EA with 3.24 uw GPA, 1130 SAT, 25 ACT. Latest SAT score is 1230, but this probably arrived too late to be considered. She did Portfolio Review in Denver in the fall.

From my D experience, portfolio is the key for art school and varies between 75-90%. However, if portfolio does not qualify to be accepted then all bets are off. Also, interestingly each school look for different things in portfolio.
RiSD looks for drawing, design and spatial dynamics. It seems truely focus on techniques, less concept.
Pratt and MICA looks for Drawing and Design. (Drawing means from observational and refined line work. )
Parson is a bit fuzzy. Their website says conceptual, but accepted portfolio shows combination.
SAIC high scholarships seems to go to experimental, variety and conceptual. So do new SMFA-Tuft, CCA, & CalArt.

So if your portfolio is accepted on their evaluation, then scholastic ranges are really wide.
RISD, Pratt: GPA 3.25+. SAT RISD 1150+, 1250 better. Pratt: 1000+ 1150 better
Parson SAIC: GPA 3+; SAT not needed or 1050+ will do.
Don’t know much about SVA, MICA, MassArt. But would be near or below SAIC in requirements.

Top 30 Universitis and Liberal Art Colleges will look for much higher GPA (3.4+] + SAT (1300+), but less portfolio capabilities. Their focus is combination of BFA+BA/BS.

I think you have to see what is your portfolio strength and then focus on school.

I completely agree with @SatKam about the value of the portfolio above all other factors. I also think what helped my daughter (3.5 GPA, by the way) was that she really did her homework and only applied to the schools that matched her interests, so conceptual with an emphasis on social justice. So far, she’s been admitted to SAIC, CCA and SFAI and waiting to hear back from MICA.

ANYWAY, with respect to SAIC, her former guidance counselor did reach out to their admissions office via email a year and ago and she specifically asked about standardized tests. Here’s the exact wording from SAIC:

"SAIC looks at ACT/ SAT reading/ EBRW scores, no other score is looked at. We recommend applying with a 21 reading score. On the SAT, we recommend a 560 EBRW score.

The test scores do factor into both admittance and the merit scholarship. A score under our recommended scores can play a significant part in the admission decision, especially if their academic history isn’t so great. Their impact on scholarships is relatively small compared to the other application materials, especially compared to portfolio, but they are definitely factored in and can set one applicant apart from another. A student might also be placed into the Academic Access Program their first year if we feel the student might struggle with college-level English in their first year, based on their application materials."

Hope this helps.

@nickscoby Great info–thanks much!

Ditto on portfolio and creative supplement being heavily weighted.

DS was admitted to Chapman Film Production ED (withdrew other apps). GPA was 3.8 UW and SAT 1070

Anyone going to the SAIC accepted students day in Brooklyn on 3/10? Having a difficult time deciding between Pratt, MICA and SAIC.

We will be at the LA day in March. My daughter is ready to commit!

We attended Open Studio day for admitted students at SAIC in mid-Jan. Very impressive all around! Daughter came away saying 90% certain she’ll commit.
