Said another school was my first choice when having dinner with Admissions Counselor?

I sent them an e-mail thanking them for the amazing four days!! And, he wasnā€™t exactly supervising me directlyā€¦ he was just sitting next to me during the formal dinner. Hopefully, heā€™ll be understanding and overlook my blunder when reading my app. Iā€™m kind of counting on it because my chances of getting in arenā€™t very high in the first placeā€¦ about 16% according to Parchment. Butā€¦ heā€™s young and just graduated this year so heā€™ll probably be more understanding that say, if I were talking to the Dean of Admissions.

@Karencat I applied to it! They review all the apps and if you get accepted, they pay for your plane ticket and everything to go to the school and spend four days there. Itā€™s basically a fall weekend where they invite 60 prospies so donā€™t worry, you wonā€™t be alone!

I have heard that interviewers are usually discouraged from asking what a studentā€™s top choice is, because it does put the student in an awkward position. Face it not every school is going to be your top choice and that okay. My son discovered that what he thought was just an okay school in September, on a visit, was at least as good as what he thought was his top choice, and in many ways was a better fit for him.

At any rate, Iā€™m hoping that the OPā€™s comment went unnoticed or was at least quickly forgotten! If you have a chance, perhaps you can say something in your "why ā€” college essay ( assuming there is one), that you had not thought that ___ college was a top choice before you visited, but that now you realize that itā€™s a great place because of x, y and z.

My son actually wrote a number of his college essays on this line. ā€œI thought I didnā€™t want to go to college that wasnā€™t on a coast, but then I realized Lake Michigan is really kind of a coast.ā€ ā€œI thought I didnā€™t want to attend an college smaller than my high school, but then I realized that Vassar was only smaller in number of students, but offered so much more.ā€ Etc. etc.

edited to add: Saw your wrote a thank you note. Great job!

@mathmom I experienced the same thing as my son! For my two top schools, I thought I would hate them but then I visited and fell absolutely head over heels for them!
