Sailing at Hobart William Smith

My D has been accepted and is interested in the sailing team. Anybody out there have some feedback? She has sailed a sunfish for many years on our small lake in our small regatta (5 time summer champ...).

Bsovia, I’m glad your daughter loves sailing. It’s in our blood in our family, and like your daughter, my son (now a senior) had had extensive sailing experience, but not in the 420s that HWS races. I don’t want to be discouraging, but HWS has a very seriously competitive sailing team, ranking in the top twenty in the country; they ALWAYS go to Nationals and HWS won Nationals a couple of years ago. My son tried out his first year and just missed the cut. The sailing program is very intense: they sail from late August to Thanksgiving and start again the beginning of February and go to the end of May. There are intense workouts involved as you have to essentially be able to do endless stomach crunches when you’re hiking out on a beat. My son recommends that if she’s serious, she should have as much experience as possible in sailing and racing Lasers or 420s. Good luck!

Thanks for you reply CarolynB. Not sure my daughter has enough experience for that level…but good information to know. How do you feel about the rest of the school? Do you know anything about crew? My daughter is actually a water polo player, but not too many schools offer that sport. She likes to be involved with a team…

I think HWS is great! It’s got lots of opportunities to explore all kinds of interests; they’re available if your daughter wants to check them out. I feel my son has had an excellent experience at HWS; he’s graduating in May. If you have more specific questions, ask away.

While I don’t really know any details about the women’s crew team, if you look at the link, you’ll see how successful their program is, so they must be doing something right:
