Hey gang i thought i would just make a thread about Saint Grottlesex schools these schools are not mentioned as much as HADES school but i thought i would make a thread because these are none the less great schools and i think they deserve a thread where people and talk and discuss them. For those of you who dont know Saint Grottlesex schools include St. Paul's, St. Mark's, and St. George's, and Groton. The purpose of this thread is to talk and discuss new students joining in Septemeber, students interested in the school, and past and present alums who want to give some imput, but also just anyone who wants to share good info about the schools.

st pauls and groton are on par with schools like deerfield and a/e. haven’t heard much about st georges, but st marks has a great reputation!

i’ve been looking into st marks and groton, and was wondering (to anyone with info) if there’s still much of a religious connotation (like, chapel, bible study (aie!), religion class, etc) with either schools? i’ve heard that at groton, you’re required to take a religion class, is this true?
if anyone has any info, that would totally help :)

Middlesex is included as well if I’m not mistaken. And I’m not sure what you mean- those schools are mentioned quite frequently, with the exception of St. George’s.

from what I have read on these boards, the acronyms change a lot. I think one that has man of the schools that are popular is GLAD CHEMMS

Groton Loomis Andover Deerfield Choate Hotchkiss Exeter Middlesex Milton St. Pauls?

I feel so proud of myself for getting that. :p

but St. Grottlesex predates CC though. So it’s not just a made up fas acronym…

@bamagirl:Yes exactly haha. When I first heard it, my guess was WAYYY off
oops well I have seen both, sooo…

bama, it’s not loomis, it’s l’ville. hahaha close enough, though!

true, groton and SPS are mentioned quite frequently, st marks as well, but not so much st georges… mx is included in St Grottlesex too, but people already know it’s a fantastic school

sorry guys i made a mistake middlesex is apart of st. grottlesex

Groton gets mentioned but it often gets overlooked and placed 2nd when the word ‘HADES’ appears!

Yes, to make it clear:
Saint Grottlesex schools include St. Paul’s, St. Mark’s, and St. George’s, Groton, and Middlesex.

The term is a portmanteau of the St. part of St. Paul’s, St. Mark’s, and St. George’s, then part of Groton, an extra t, and then ended with Middlesex. The St. Grottlesex schools were founded in the mid- to late nineteenth century for well-to-do Episcopal Church boys (excepting nondenominational Middlesex, founded in 1901), and were consciously styled as the American equivalent of famous English public schools (for example Eton, Harrow, Charterhouse, Shrewsbury, Winchester, and Rugby). In contrast, the so-called academies, such as Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, and Milton, were generally founded in the late eighteenth century as places to “combine scholarship with more than a little Puritan hellfire” and, originally, were often the first educational step in preparing men for the Puritan ministry

Groton is harder to get in than alot of hades schools i think it is gets placed as second due to its small size, but i think thats one of the things that make groton unique and separates it from hades school is that it is a small school and has a very tight knite community.

Saint Grottlesex refers to the socailly elite BS in the mid and early 19th century

Are you sure Hcos dosnt isnt it a word just used to describe st. marks, st. george’s, groton, middlesex, and st. paul’s. kind of like an acronym like hades

St. Paul’s is the s in HADES.

^^ yes, KC that is correct. Now would you like to state the relevance of that?

People im not trying to be rude or anything but could we please quit talking about the name i kinda explained it in the first post so please stop asking about it. This thread is meant to talk and discuss St. Grottlesex schools alright. So lets try to stick on topic here if we can.

Glad to see that Middlesex is finally getting some recognition on here! It’s really tough when great schools like Groton, Milton and Middlesex get so left out of discussions because of acronyms like HADES (I like GLAD CHEMMS, for the record). I shudder to think of how many CC applicants might have excluded these schools from their lists because of a mere acronym! But anyway, I’m here if anyone has questions about ONE of the St. Grottlesex schools.

I have a question for Izzy. If I remember correctly from last year, you were not an athlete? How is that working for you? My daughter will likely look at Middlesex and is so petite that she doesn’t really have a fighting chance at being competitive in most sports. (other than as a coxwain )

It seems to me that at the smaller schools, being able to field all the teams is a bigger challenge and that there wouldn’t be as much room for non-athletic kids. Have you found this to be true?

I almost didn’t apply to Groton 'cause of CC, so the HADES thing can mislead newbies who don’t know much about BS.
