I'm having a hard time deciding between Saint Joseph's University in PA and Hofstra in NY. I want to major in biology and like being near the city but not in it. I want a lot of school spirit and fun things to do outside of the classroom as well as a good experience inside. Which school has a better biology program or is the better school overall? PLEASE HELP!!!

I dont know about specific programs. Both schools are about equal on reputation. St. Joe’s is a Jesuit college and that is something special. Its also smaller. Its on the MainLine in Philly. I know people there and they like it. Its a very pretty campus, though small.

Its really what you want. Where are you from? What are you looking for in a school really? Want to be close to home or a couple of hours away? Like a new crowd or the same high school kids you hang out with?

St.Joes’ will challenge you with their core requirements. St. Joes plays in the A10 in basketball and that is a hot conference with bigger names. Hofstra plays in the CAA and most those schools are in the south…so not much rivalry there to get excited about.

St. Joe’s is much closer to downtown Philly while Hofstra is on Long Island.
Its up to you.

Make your decision, take the plunge, buy the gear and then close the book and turn the page and embrace your school.

I’m from CT so St. Joe’s is a little further away about 4 hrs while Hofstra is about 2. Distance isn’t a huge deal for me and definitely not a deal breaker. Im really looking for the school where i will be able to learn socially and mentally and be challenge while at the same time be able to have fun. I love getting excited for sports and believe it really pulls the school community together, something i strongly dislike about Hofstra but again not a deal breaker. I love the fact that both schools are near a city but not actually in the center of it all. Im looking for a real college community not just a place i live and learn.

I live close to Hofstra - I wouldn’t recommend it really. It’s a safety/commuter school (at least for my classmates).

One of my friends went there (from CT actually) and she didn’t like their bio program really.

I do not recommend Hofstra either. I’m just biased though. I was interested in Hofstra but once I saw a clip in You tube, I realized that it was not a school I want to be and they are not people I want to be friends with.

What exactly is wrong with Hofstra? They I saw their adds around so I was curious.

I dont do school bashing. But I do think that Hofstra is more of a commuter school…or at least a lot of locals go there, even if they reside on campus freshman year…they often move off campus for later years. They seem to be downsizing sports over there, despite their basketball success of late. Every school is a different environment and “vibe”. It doesnt mean Hofstra is not a good school. Fordham has commuters too. So does Columbia and NYU. For some, commuting is the only way they can afford to go to college.

But I do think St. Joe’s is more of a traditional campus community, though its a small campus. Visit both and make up your mind. Its your decision and your future. Go where you will excel and grow the most.

If you’ll be living on campus for both schools, which one will likely have more students also living on campus?

Ghost is right about the value of a Jesuit education…very respected everywhere.

Are both schools affordable?

My good friend’s daughter is at St. Joes. Loves it and everything about it. Haven’t heard a negative at all.
My dentist and now his daughter went to/are at St. Joes. More grads on LI than you may think.

Hofstra academics are likely fine and they are known for some good majors, but I think most will prefer St. Joes.

Good luck in your decision.

wow thanks for some much input! it’s already more than i expected, I cant wait to visit saint joes for the admitted student day on the 27th!

SJU!!!
If you are looking for school pride you have found the right place. THE HAWK WILL NEVER DIE!!!
Also SJU’s school of business is one of the best.
Also it is beautiful there and the people are so nice and you will have a great four years there.
I live in a suburb of philly and I have been accepted there but its not right for me but that is because it is way to close to my house (about an hour with traffic) and they dont have a FB team.

I can’t speak to bio, and you should make your own decision, but believe SJU has more school spirit (Hofstra just dropped football, citing low student attendance) and less of a commuter feel. SJU is much smaller and much more Catholic. It is an easy ride to Philly.
