thanks! :)

lol. Someone even asked my question on the McKinsey site:

[quote]
Consulting seems a little vague I don't understand what consultants actually do.

We solve the most important problems facing our clients, be they big companies or small ones, nonprofit organizations or government institutions.

So consulting is basically an entire field: telling businesses how best to run their business?

lol, sounds like my kind of gig!

:) It's become quite a huge field, they even have consulting firms whose specialty is training the managers of other consulting firms. Pretty crazy!

randysavage...he works at Goldman in NY. he's become an associate in 3 years, and gonna become VP next. he's a real person...im not that stupid to make up a fictional cousin here. his salary is in DOLLARS. 600K dollars + bonus.

callthecops, is his job from 9 to 5 or does he work for 16 hours straight?

there are no 9-5 jobs in ibanking (even the admin staff works more!)

more like 16. in his 1st and second year, as an analyst, he worked sometimes from 8 am till 1 am. as an associate, he leaves at 11. big difference ;)

salary data for ibanking(a bit outdated though)
http://www.careers-in-finance.com/compensation-study1.htm

they kinda match up, my cousin skipped a couple of steps inbetween, but with the salaries matching up. 670K befr bcming VP is what he's got (about). he missed 1 year as an analyst and 2 years as an associate.

i wish i could getta be Dept head. imagine a cool 65 million dollars a year :p

I guess this might sound dumb, but what exactly do the people in the following positions do? And which ones require the MBA?

-Analyst
-Associate
-Vice President
-Managing Director
-Department Head

Thanks

well, what they exactly do, im not fully sure. but they sure do earn loadsa money! Well from what i know from my cuz, its financial engineering (when an associate). lots of sweet talking to clients from different parts of the world. Travelling 1st class to London, Paris, Madrid, hot destinations for business for business deals. and earning more $$$

http://news.efinancialcareers.com/employer_profile_item/newsItemId-1729 shows some stuff about goldman. its hard as hell to get a job there without internships.

I'm probably working there summer after my sophomore year as a summer associate. :p

I tried to get an internship there this summer but it didn't work out :(
But I got into one of their Goldman Scholars programs so yay :)

Funny that the article's like "no wonder they're known as The Firm" because every big law firm/investment bank calls themselves The Firm.

Yeah here at Shearman and Sterling, it has lots of references to "The Firm", referring to itself of course.

Zant: Does being a Goldman Scholar help you get a job there during college or something?

Not guaranteed, but they give you the opportunity/connection to apply for a job as a summer associate after sophomore year of college. Then the program ends, but your connections will stay.

wow. what does it take to be a goldman scholar?

That's pretty cool, didn't know that

callthecops: You need to be in a program, and you send in your grades/a rec/resume and they interview and evaluate you.
