Salaries

I see alot of people aspiring and having conflicts between Law and Medicine- if it comes down to the salary, will everyone choose medicine?
From what i've seen on average salaries of lawyers in a private law firm is a mean of about 150,000$/yr, and the average salary of a private specialty surgeon is about 350,000$/yr. (Internet google salaries)
Am I missing something? I always thought the two were very similar in annual salaries

I just thought it would be kind of ridiculous for all these people attending Harvard College undergrad majoring in Political Science and then Yale Law School to come out of all that debt for college just to make ~150,000$/yr. I hope I'm missing something and am not coming off as a total idiot. Thanks!

Just $150K? Maybe money isn't everything to everyone? Doctors have to deal with blood and poo. And malpractice. And tons of school. I'd rather be a lawyer..Though I'd still feel rich with 'just' $60K a year :D

Watch The Weather Man with Nicholas Cage. It'll make you think twice about choosing a career based on the salary. Focus more on being happy... as cliched as it is, money won't buy hapiness... focus on obtaining the goals you want to achieve...

But if I'd be happy doing both, why not do the one that pays more?

If you want to do that, have at it.

I just know, for me, 80 hour work weeks don't fit into my lifeplan... nor do law school or medical school. I don't think any salary is worth your life being consumed that much.

But if you feel the calling to either of those fields, go for it...

I guess what I meant was if an equal desire was in both of the fields- would one go into medicine based off of the money? And is the statistic of a private firm lawyer with a mean salary of ~150,000$ accurate? I always thought the two professions were very equal in salaries.

I'd never be a doctor personally, so, uhm, I guess, if you, like, like, both uhm, professions, like, equally then why don't you just choose the highest salary?

Chipset- thanks, I guess that really wasn't my question when I made this thread... I suppose a more valid question would be is the accuracy of that mean salary for lawyers correct?

Because salary isn't everything... and once you do your research, I swear you won't like them equally. Either one will rise to the top of your list, or you'll hate them both...

Read both Law School Confidential and Med School Confidential to get a better idea about the process of going into either fields... they are very, very different and will mean two different life styles. I would personally lean towards law--I don't like blood though. Obvioiusly, it's different for everyone. Don't let salary be your main factor... lifestyle should be over that... and not what kind of car you drive, I mean how much you work, how much you're at home, potential for vacations... Just do some research.

Law School and Medical School confidential? Those are?

I assume those..

Yeah, doctors have to pay malpractice insurance in case they screw up.

Personally, I wouldn't want to be a doctor because if I kill someone over my mistake, then I wouldn't ever be able to live with it. I would feel horrible.

Besides law is more interesting to me. I love my Law Studies class.

No, they are books... that's why I cited them in italics.
