Do PLUS loans the school lists as meeting need make us ineligible to apply for the Sallie Mae Unmet Need Scholarship?

No. PLUS loans do not “meet need.” - rather, PLUS is a federal lending program that provides support both for filling unmet need and for paying the EFC.

the colleges don’t care if you borrow from Lenny the loan shark, as long as you pay the bill

Believe me, I have learned that.

I meant would Sallie Mae not accept the app since the school considers “need met”. You have to send in an FA award.

has anyone been notified of the award?

in some older threads i saw that they usually notify you (by mail) near the end of july. i still have not heard anything(though i have received over six loan ads from sallie mae in the last week). when i emailed the director she was brusque if not rude and also said that they would notify us by the end of july.

I haven’t received any word either. Oh well.

PLUS loans are not certified by the school in an amount that would cause the package to exceed Cost of Attendance. Say COA is $20,000. If grants, scholarships, work study, and student loans that the student accepted total $14,000 the PLUS can only be certified for $6000. If the parent prefers to borrow a PLUS in place of $5500 student unsubsidized loan, then the PLUS could be certified for up to $11,500. And if a $2500 work study award was declined, that total for PLUS would go up to $14,000.

If the accepted student aid totaled $20,000 there would be no room for PLUS.

If the parent requested $10,000 and the accepted student aid totaled $16,000, the school would only certify the PLUS for the $4000 that is COA-accepted student aid.

still nothing…

Maybe they only notify winners?

in the older threads they gave out rejection letters also, but apparently not this time… =[

“Letters were mailed on July 30th to applicants selected as recipients for the Unmet Need Scholarship Program. Applicants not selected as recipients will not be notified. A list of 2009 recipients will be posted at [The Sallie Mae Fund](http://www.salliemaefund.org) in September.”

i emailed her…

Hmm. Oh well. Congrats to anyone who got it!

:[ well, she told me this: “Applicants selected as recipients will receive notification via first-class mail no later than August 14, 2009.”

did anyone here get it? when did you apply?
