i posted this in the undergrad forum bc i wanted some input from students my age (i'm a freshman), but i am also looking for students who are currently in grad school for a grad school perspective.

If that school is the best or among the very best in your chosen field, it might not be a handicap. But in general, diversity of place and culture is valued in academia. Your first tenure track job is likely to be somewhere totally different than your undergraduate institution - if you have spent your entire academic career in that place, how can hiring committees know that you can succeed in varying environments?

Maybe go elsewhere for your master’s degree, then apply for doctoral studies at your undergrad school?

“Close to home” is a terrible reason to choose an institution, particularly for graduate school. Don’t know what your field is but the top programs have very low acceptance rates anyway…see also, eggs & numbers of baskets.

this might be your goal, but graduate admission committees do not favor admitting students from their same institution. Therefore, your application will need to be clearly among the top to be offered admittance.
