Same-Sex vs. Coed Floors | UMich

Going to UMich this fall and most likely living in SQuad. Just wondering if I should choose same-sex or coed living… is there a huge difference? Is it easier to make friends or significantly quieter in either one? Is it easier to get a single in either one?

Thanks.

Single room is usually easier to get as it is more expensive. Not sure if they have that for freshmen though as there are separated pools of rooms and returned students pick their room earlier.

Thanks for the reply! Good to hear getting a single isn’t impossible. How about single sex vs coed living? What are the pros and cons of each one? And are they both available in squad?

Single is normally much harder to get because more people want them actually. But it’s not impossible, I myself am in a single (EQ), there are lots of singles on my floor (EQ) and I know other freshman in SQ with singles (albeit all of my data points there are honors kids). I’m 99.99% sure SQ has both same and mixed gender halls.

Personally I am a female freshman in a co-ed floor and I love it to death. Truthfully, most of my friends on my floor are the guys and my very best friends at Michigan are people from my floor. With that said, I’ve always gotten along well with guys since I’ve been involved with heavily male activities like robotics in the past. Regardless though, I literally cannot imagine my life without my guy hallmates. I think it teaches you some unique things to live in a coed hall and makes your environment a bit more exciting/diverse. On the flip side though, I have a few friends in the all girls dorms and they adore the sisterhood type aspects, and some of my friends in same gender halls say they just feel more comfortable that way, so it’s up to you. Personally I’m a huge advocate for co-ed.

@GoBlueWolverine thank you for the information! Just wondering, since you’re in EQ, are you in RC? And did you get the single as a freshman?

It is interesting to hear the single room is more in demand. When my D picked sophomore housing, all double rooms were gone as she got a lower priority code and she has to choose a single room instead.

@ats234 I am currently a freshman with an EQ single and no I am not in the RC ^^. In East there are two sides of the building, O side and H side, and O side is primarily RC kids while H side is primarily not RC kids. I live on the H. For me it’s great especially since I’m in Ross, which is right across the street. They’re currently trying to pull back on the number of non freshmen non RC kids in East, just as a fun fact.

@billcsho I don’t remember where I heard this exactly, but believe a significant portion of sophomore housing+ is singles, not so much for freshmen because there are just so many of them to be housed. I could be wrong but that’s what I’ve come to understand.

I think this is a matter of your comfort level. I live on a coed floor in south quad and people are pretty quiet (my floor isn’t particularly social). I think it is definitely a good opportunity to make some friendly faces of the opposite sex if you live with them and see them every day. I’ve heard all boys floors get pretty loud but not sure about all girls, and not sure about how easy it is to get a single, though I don’t know of any singles on my coed floor.

Any Idea which things to check on housing form for two girls who are going in as roommates who want to love in coed dorm on CENTRAL campus or HILL?
