Anyone on cc that has visited Samford. I want to kno what it is like bc I just recently received info on it. I don't know if I'm interested in such a small school...

Its a very beautiful campus, arguably one of the most. Birmingham is a large city but the people are warm and friendly. If they are sitting next to you they probably will start talking to you. Everyone around Samford only has good things to say about its students. There is a real sense of community at Samford. Birmingham may be a large city, but it has that small town feel to it. In many ways Birmingham is a college town and Samford is its star college.

It is a alcohol free campus and you will need either good grades or good test scores to get in and receive a decent scholarship. I have a 3.2 GPA (4 is an A at my school) a 29 ACT score and a 1430 SAT score (they don’t count writing). Also, because The grading scale at my school is 84-92 92-100 etc. They change it to the 80-90 90-100 scale which if you have border grades like I do, translates to a potentially higher GPA. In my case it turns out about a 3.6 and they do count weighted grades, 1 grade mark higher for AP and 1/2 a mark higher for Honors classes. Also, they are interested in leadership. Having had a leadership role will help you get in and get scholarships.

The school is Southern Baptist, but they aren’t preachy about it. It seems like they are more accepting of other viewpoints and they definitely still have fun. They aren’t super conservative. There is a nightlife at Samford, I was at one of their concerts, but they just aren’t one of those voracious party schools. Their cafeteria is very nice and their freshman dorms are in good shape and clean. There are NO coed dorms. And lots of stuff is closed on Sunday because it is the south and there are a lot of southern baptists. And a lot of black people. Not trying to be racist or anything, my black friend that used to live in alabama agrees with me.

They have a nice workout area and are very into football. Their theatre productions are excellent and auditions and tech positions are open to the entire school. The teachers are nice and really want to help students reach their potential. Freshmen are allowed to have cars on campus. There is a greek system, but its NOT all greek cliquey. The campus is fairly flat, the hills are more rolling with with a small amount of steeper hills. Overall the campus is bike-able, and its no big hike from one side of the campus to the other so walking is fine.
